Devorah (Dverka) LIPSHITZ
#general
misaacso@...
Hi everyone- this is a shot in the dark, but I figured what the heck.
I have always tried to find out what happened to the family of my grandfather's half-sister, known as Dverka (Deborah, Devorah). Her maiden name was LIPSHITZ, and her parents were Mendel and Pesha(?) LIPSHITZ. She had one sister, Rebecca (Riva) who married Ezra ALTMAN. Dverka, born in Riga, Latvia, married, and fled, probably to Poland, before the war. We know she and her husband were killed, but we are unsure about her children. Unfortunately, we don't know her married name or her husband's first name. I am just hoping against hope that someone out there might recognize any of this and could give me some info...? Thanks so much!! Given Name Hodes(h) - Many thanks
#general
Tom Venetianer <tom.vene@...>
To all the nice people who wrote me about the origin of the given name
Hodes, a Big Thank You Very Much. To my amazement, there isn't a clear consensus. Two main lines emerged: one which claims that it is a Yiddish form of Hadassa (hadas = myrtle) and another which states that it could be a variation of the Hebrew name Yehudit. Personally I'm inclined to accept the first version, but that's my guts feelings. My mother's Hebrew name was Hodes (pronounce Hodesh) and since she was born in Hungary, in an orthodox family, I tend to believe that Hadassa-Esther would probably be more likely a name my grandfather would have selected. Yehudit-Judith was not such a "kosher" name, at least then, in Hungary. The reason for my inquiry was that we are going to give a Hebrew name to our 3rd granddaughter. So, after this consultation, we decided to call her Chaya Hadassa. Once again, thanks to all who responded the best Tom -- Tom Venetianer <mailto:tom.vene@uol.com.br> Sao Paulo - Brazil

I noticed your interest in Pinsk - and that you are new to this. So I just thought that I'd call your attention to the Belarus SIG where there is a lot of information -- and more to come -- on Pinsk (and other places in Belarus, of course). I think it would be a good place to start searching (there is the "All Belarus Database" and a lot of other helpful information on its website: http://www.jewishgen.org/Belarus/ There is also the Belarus SIG Online Newsletter (where you can find three articles on Pinsk): http://www.jewishgen.org/Belarus/newsletter/bnl_index.htm I would also suggest that you subscribe to the Belarus SIG Discussion Group which you can do easily by following the directions on: http://www.jewishgen.org/listserv/sigs.htm Be sure to choose "Belarus" NOTE: There are no dues! Among our approx. 1300 members there are a lot of knowledgable and experienced researchers who might be able to -- and are willing -- help.
