Re: Missing NYC marriage cert #ukraine

SBens101@...

I wrote several letters to the 5 boroughs searching for the 1910 marriage
record of my grandparents. I was only able to find it after searching
through Mormon films of the marriage indexes and then ordering any records
that were remotely close in spelling. It turned out that BENNIS was listed
under BONOS. Hope this helps.

Re: Transilation Please #general

Arthur B. Schwartz, Jr. <abschwartzjr@...>

Dear Genners:

I would like to thank all those who responded to my request and want to
tell how valuable this information is to me.

The name you have translated is indeed my grandmothers maiden name. She
came >from Bialystok, Poland when she was 9 years old (in 1919) with her 2
brothers (ages 13 and 15) to join their father who proceeded them. As they
came through Ellis Island, the oldest and my grandmother stood in one line
and their name was recorded as SHEVACK, the younger brother stood in another
line and his name was recorded as SHIVAK. To make things even more
confusing (and I don't know the whole story) my great grandfather's name was
recorded as SHEWACH or SHWACH. Very confusing to say the least.

I am hoping this new information will help me in continuing my pursuit in
finding my ancestors.

Gratefully,

Art Schwartz, Jr.

Dear Genners,

Can someone deciper the meaning of the following:

shin, vet, chet

This is supposed to be my grandmothers family name in Hebrew (so I have
been told - I don't know Hebrew). I would like to know how it translates
because I am finding it difficult to trace her family because the spelling
was changed at Ellis Island, not once but twice! Two different spellings
for different family members - depending on which line they stood in.

Thanks,
Art Schwartz, Jr.

Question - Piotrkow #poland

Rita Ashley Fishman <ritafishman@...>

I just got the note on the Piotrkow site. >from my father-in-law's social
security records it shows that he was b. Lodz, Piotrkow, Poland in 1897. Is Piotrkow a city, county, state or what?

I apologize for asking such a question, but, I just do not understand the
organization of of towns, etc in Poland at that time.

SZAJNZYCHT (Sheinzicht - it may have many different spellings) #lodz #poland

David Lewin <davidlewin@...>

Have you ever come across the surname SZAJNZYCHT (Sheinzicht ) ?

It may have many different spellings

I am searching for survivors or heirs of the family of David SZAJNZYCHT who
was born in Demblin in 1900.

He survived Auschwitz, and died in 1997 in Miami without children.

If I can locate any family members, they have a right to reclaim some
property. However, this must be done before May 2001. After that it will
be too late.

>from the Holocaust Museum in Washington I have heard that FOUR survivors
from LODZ Ghetto are on a 1945 list.
I would be grateful for ANY snippets of information

Re: Researching records in Warsaw #warsaw #poland

Nicole Berline <nberline@...>

Pierre
Urzad Stanu Cywilnego in Warszawa- Srodmiescie (= Birth, death and marriages
office in Warsaw, Centre) is now sufficiently computerised that if you give them
birth certificate, or at least date of birth, full name, preferably place of
birth, within the borders of pre-war Poland, you can get missing particulars .
I wrote a letter to USC - in polish- requesting my mother birth record
- Ruchla ROTENSZTEJN, born in Warszawa dec 28, 1917 - and they answered
very quickly through the french consulate.
However the answer was that there was no such birth record,
although they looked for years 1917-2000 ( sic ! )
I was very shocked by this answer which seemed to imply that my mother
was not born in Warszawa .
So I wrote a second time enclosing a copy of the matriculation Certificate
of my mother, issued in Warszawa 1936, stating her birth date and birth place .
This time they answerd that the record could not be found in the books *that
they have*.

So I suggest to write to USC
but be aware that many of their books are destroyed .
You may find a sample letter somewhere on JewishGen site ,
or I can forward my letter to you .

You can write in french.

I paid by enclosing 20 $ traveller's checks. I have been told that money
transfers
through American Express are not so expensive as through french banks
( I have not checked this information )

In order to assuage their concerns we have arranged to have the name of the

Thus there will be a tip-off that the message has come through the mailing list,
in that
the name Warszawa will appear in the subject line.

Dear friends,
I thought it could be usefull for somebody to share this informations I
got
on a birth-act of one member of my Mendelssohn family born in Warszawa on
2.7.1857 (cyrkuli X,Solec-Street):
as witnesses of his birth-act were:
-Benjamin NASBERG, jewish tutor, age:56, living inWarszawa
n°2925
-Nordka WALLACH,(public?)-writer,age:29, living in Warszawa
n°2745

Sharing information when we have the chance to find civil-acts could be
usefull ;is there a website on Jewishgen to archive such datas?
Best regards,

Zenygarotha-a town in Russia #general

"Jeanne Woods" <jwoods@...>

I just received an (eagerly awaited) passenger list which lists my
Belopolsky family arriving in New York 1904. Their country of residence is
listed as Russia, and the town is written as Zenygarotha. It is a little
hard to read, but that's what it looks like. I have been searching for some
clue about this town, but can't seem to find out anything about it. I am
hoping someone can help with this puzzle!
Thanks, Jeanne Woods
