I know that MELCHIOR is a famous name in Denmark (rabbis, etc.)

Does anybody know if Lauritz Melchior, famous operatic singer, was Jewish?

Early Jewish landowners in Decatur, GA #general

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

Don't be surprised that there were Jewish settlers in Georgia in 1849. As
one of the original thirteen colonies, Georgia also boasted of early Jewish
landowners and shopkeepers as well as participants in the later
Revolutionary War.

In 1733, several boatloads of Jewish colonists arrived in the newly founded
town of Savannah, primarily with Jews of Spanish/Portuguese or German
extraction. They migrated as others did >from the colonies such as Virginia
and >from the Caribbean, England and Germany.

There is much written and many records to be found about the Jews of
Georgia.

We have a Lubavitch rabbi in our town one of whose first names is
Zanvil. According to him it is the Yiddish for 'ginger'.

My g'grandmother's headstone indicates that her husband was "Rav"Chaim

Can I take it that the use of "Rav" indicates that the person is/was a
Rabbi or is it used sometimes as a term of "honor?"
Rav = rabbi.
But I suspect that on this headstone both terms could stand for
Reb = Mister.
Usually if it did mean rabbi the term would be Harav = the Rabbi.
Certainly that would be the case in the name of your ggm's father.

Marriage in Eiselstein #general

Gill Joye <Gilljoye@...>

I have a copy of a sworn affadavit which states that CHARLES SOLOMON married
Cesira Marinina MIRANDOLI on 16th August 1859 in Eiselstein, near Rotterdam.
(Their Hebrew names were Saul and Sarah). They normally lived in London and
had married abroad (they already had 3 children) because Cesira converted to
the jewish faith at this time.

I am keen to track down the actual marriage record and wondered if anyone
could help me with a lookup or tell me who to contact. I think that
nowadays Eiselstein is the same place as Ijsselstein.

I would like to add to this posting I failed to mentioned originally.

I am sorry I did not make it clear that those are copy's of the documents I
received >from the LDS. I asked for my branch which does not even resemble
the names on those certificates. However since I read Polish I was able to
get the information and am offering it to whoever is interested. I can scan
it for you or mail it, but for this I'll need an address.
Sorry if I misled anyone

Transilation Please #general

Arthur B. Schwartz, Jr. <abschwartzjr@...>

Dear Genners,

Can someone deciper the meaning of the following:

shin, vet, chet

This is supposed to be my grandmothers family name in Hebrew (so I have
been told - I don't know Hebrew). I would like to know how it translates
because I am finding it difficult to trace her family because the spelling
was changed at Ellis Island, not once but twice! Two different spellings
for different family members - depending on which line they stood in.

Thanks,

Art Schwartz, Jr.
