Hi again-
Just a thought-but the grandchildren called my paternal grandmother's "Mashie". "Mashie", >from what I've found is Yiddish name for 'Mary' or 'Maria'. Pronounced the same way, but spelled "Moishe" means "Moses."

My grandmother's maiden name was Miller. There are many listings for Jewish families with the last name "Moishe."

Perhaps her family's last name was Moishe; just a thought.

Linda Cantor has presented some serious concerns about an online
journal. I myself am not a subscriber to the current journal. I would
like to find out more about it.

One thing I have been concerned about in regard to online sharing of
information is the privacy issue. Once something is online, there is no
stopping the Google robot and other search facilities. Since many
people use mother's maiden names as security codes, I have been
wondering how much information to share at any Web site. I would like
to hear feed back >from people on this issue.

I was also surprised to find that two quick and illiterate
emails that I sent to the SIG are permanently posted on the JewGen
notice board. How do I get those off?

Re: Online vs Print -Editor Needed! #galicia

I don't know, I am not on any kind of committee that decides these things,
but I don't believe anyone is threatening to do away with the printed
Galicianer. I assume we are talking about a much more economical way of
distributing the journal for those who WANT it, and eventually, of course,
as these things are wont, for more and more people to go over to the
electronic format. The advantages are obvious. So are the disadvantages.

HOWEVER:

Unless someone else (plural) is willing to rise to Leslie's challenge, this
whole discussion will become accademic. Latent Editors: it's time to come
out of the closet!

It seems to me that many people agree that online AND print is the best
way
forward which leaves us back with thr original problem of finding an
editor.
Does anyone who wants the newsletter to remain in print wish to edit it?
Could this be shared?
I would be interested in sharing (maybe only once a year) the job...

As you probably know, Jewish Records Indexing - Poland has embarked on a
project to index the vital records held at the AGAD Archives in Warsaw. These
records include those for Strusow (Births 1877-1890, Marriages 1871-1875, and
Deaths 1871-1876).

Researchers for the following shtetlach near Strusow should know that vital
records for these towns are very likely to be included in the Strusow
registers.

Dear Max,

It appears to be Satanow (49:15 26:16), which is 22.8 miles east of Kobylovoloky
(49:12 25:46).

I did use ShtetlSeeker for this information, but I approached it >from the Satanow

Coordinates for Galicia? Pronunciation of Chrzechow? #galicia

Dave Lewak <dlewak@...>

Hi,
does any one know the minimum and maximum longitude and latitude
coordinates for Galicia? Everytime I do search on ShtetlSeeker,
I get large number of possible matches, even if I just look in Poland,
and I would like to eliminate some of the matches. So for instance,
I just did a search for Chrzechow in Poland, and came up with 211
matches. Since some of these are obviously too far north (when I look
on MapQuest), I would like eliminate those outside of Galicia from
consideration.

On a side note, does anyone know how Chrzechow would be
pronounced? I am looking for the ancestral town of my great-great-
grandfather, Simcha Winzelberg; my grandmother pronounces the
town's name as "Che-khoff", where the "kh" is a hard h; I recently
discovered that a family of Winzelbergs came >from Chrzechow.

Thanks -- Dave Lewak, Berkeley, CA
Ukraine:MISHURIMAN, POLISHER, FLICKSTEIN, TOBERMAN(>from Balta)
Galicia:WINZELBERG, WERTHEIM (>from Chekhoff?)

Snail mail vs On -Line #galicia

Myrna Levin <mlevin1412@...>

I would like to see this newsletter continue as it is through the Post
Office. My computer skills are limited and it would be difficult for me
should it be only on-line. I would have no desire to print out a large
volume of material.

I enjoy reading it as it is now and often refer back to past issues. As my
research progresses I often find that an article that previously was not
significant to me has all of a sudden taken on a new meaning. I find it
easy to refer back to an article in the current format.

To me, the main reason to be a paying member of GG is to receive these
