RAMLE/LOD #lodz #poland

Shalom.
RAMLE (Ramlah in Hebrew) and LOD are 2 neighbouring towns in central Israel
that had a common cemetery
in the early years of the state of Israel.
Gideon Carmi.

I have recently come across a family tree whose members clearly came from
the Lodz area, in particular RADOMSKO. However the place of death is given
as "RAMLE(LOD), I". I can't find anything resembling "RAMLE using the
stetl
finder. Does anyone know the location of "RAMLE(LOD), I" ?

Re: Mutilation to Advoid Conscription #belarus

Larry Gaum <lgaum@...>

Most Jews did not mutilate themselves to avoid conscription. It was quite
common however, to consume vinegar in large quantities. The result was a
dramatic loss of weight and in some cases an appearance that simulated some
medical disease, such as consumption (T.B.) Jews, and non Jews did not go
around chopping off fingers and toes. This is a myth. More to the truth,
many jewish men and boys served in the Imperial Russian Army, some with
distinction and were highly decorated. In many cases, being in the army
with three square meals a day was a lot better than starving in a small
shtetl. Incidentally, chopping off a small bit of finger did not excuse
anyone >from serving in the army.

List of Holocaust Victims from Vilna #belarus

sman@...

I recently sent a message to the group called "Lida, Belarus and the Holocaust" In it I mentioned a list of Jews >from Vilnius killed during WW II. I have gotten a number of requests for more information on the list. I have decided to publish it to the whole group in case there are others interested.

The list is published as a handwritten book. It contains around 1200 names. I found it in the Family History Center in Salt Lake City. The title/author are:
Destruction of Jewish Vilna by R. Beliauskene. The call number at the FHC is 947.5 F2k

The description in the centers catalogue read:
"List of Jewish residents of Vilnius, Lithuania, which were killed during World War II. Provides the name and location and year of death. Often gives occupation and sometimes birthplace. Compiled by eye witness accounts, exhibitions, and documents.
Translated >from Yiddish original "Huvbn Vilne", Paris, 1949.
Huvbn Vilne unkum fun di Yidn in Vilne un Vilnen gegnt der harigehtol ponari pezenlekbe iberlebungeni...Szmerke Kaczerginski

I would appreciate it if someone could do a quick translation of the above yiddish.

The names on the one page I copied are:
Sonia Krubick
Grigory Kac
Genya Kac
Thusan? Korabeinik
Kanak
Kulkes
Zalman Kac
Ru?n Kagan
Kremer
Fishl Kremerman
