Wash,DC funeral director update
#general
James H Gross <larklane@...>
Hello,
It appears that the Jewishgen infopage on Washington,DC area funeral directors is out of date. I also found that contacting MD/DC cemetaries can be quite challenging. Due to geographic shifts, it appears many MD/DC cemetaries have merged and or closed. It can be a challenge to identify and track down the correct person handling, or having these records. In addition, apparently a person could be buried in DC,MD or VA as they are all in close proximity. I was twice told "no listing" when it turned out that the deceased was there. recommend that anyone trying to track down deaths & plots be persistent My recent calls to them resulted in the following: Danzansky-Goldberg Memorial Chapels 1170 Rockville Pike Rockville,MD 20852 301-340-1400 merged in the 1960's, records are not computerized, prefers letters in writing Stein Hebrew Memorial Funeral Home- closed in 1999. Its records are in the basement of Peason Funeral Home Pearson will do checks by mail. Pearson Funeral Home 472 North Washington St Falls Church,VA 22046 703-532-7647

Dear Mark,
When I visited the Amsterdam City Archives on Wednesday, November 22, 2000, I looked up a CHANANIA relative of mine in the Death Records for the years 1923-1932. I was intrigued to find the following CITROEN names listed righted under his, in alphabetical order, and, because a cousin of my mother's married his wife Rose CITROEN in the Netherlands, I thought I should jot their names down for further study: CITROEN, Coletta/Elisabeth/Flora/Hartog/Isaak, Jacob Roelof, Jeannette, Karel Solomon Roelof/Marianne/L. Meyer/Rebekka/Rebecca/Saartje/Sara/ Willem. Given that "Citroen" means "lemon" in Dutch, I don't think all of the above were necessarily Jewish. However, some of the names do show Jewish given names. Just thought I'd pass this on to you as general information. I'll be glad to provide you with the address of the Amsterdam archives, etc. Happy Chanukah! It may be well to point out that the changes described below are a
first stage in the elimination of area codes altogether. Stay tuned for further information on this as it becomes pertinent. Glusock and Sulphur mining
#general
Alexander Skolnick <askolnic@...>
I recently found that my great-grandmother, Golda Glusock (with 2 kids)
came to US in 1912 and the ship manifest listed that they came >from Dvinsk (currently named Daugavpils, Latvia). Her husband (Israel) had died young (prior to 1912) and one story was that he was a sulphur miner. Was sulphur mining done in this area? Has anyone ever heard of people with this unusual last name? It seems that there is no clear correct spelling. In my research I've encountered the names: Glusok, Gluschok, and Glusack. any info would be appreciated. Alex skolnick

Last night I came in on the end of a yiddish movie being shown on my local
PBS station. When the credits were run at the end one of the actors was listed as ALKUNEH. There is no way to tell whether that was the first or last name. Has anyone ever come across this name? I would love to find out if this is a given or surname and its origin. Thank you and a Happy Chanukah Barbara Meyers searching:Alk,Kaflowitz >from Bialystok

Tuberculosis and Death Certificates
#general
MMBegun@...
Hi -- are you certain they died in Penna? Perhaps they were in T.B.
hospitals in other nearby states. This is what I discovered in the case of a relative who died >from T.B. If they were ill, they usually were not at home, but confined to a sanatorium. Pennsylvania, as you know, borders N.Y. on the North and N.J. on the east. You might want to research T.B. hospitals near the towns the relatives lived in, which might be just over the state border. At one time there was a massive T.B. facility on Staten Island, N.Y., which today is known as Seaview Hospital and Home. All the vacant buildings stand deteriorating and ghostly -- quite a sight. Check that one out, since their patients came >from far & wide. Hope this helps, Mila Begun in NYC(MMBegun@aol.com)
