Kosice ! Nyitra! Wien! #hungary

Following Louis' suggestion here are the surnames I am searching:
The ASCHNERs seem to have mostly come out of Nyitra megye in the early and
mid-1850s and moved on to Bratislava, Wien, Budapest and Kosice. There are
big 'branches' >from those cities and >from Silesia. I am in contact with
descendants. It seems almost all of them were businessman with important
stores or factories.

The GOLDMANNS and LANGERs cluster around Kosice/Kassa, Presov and possibly
Miskolc. Samuel GOLDMANN and wife Lena LANGER ran the Kantin in the Great
Armory there and many of the family were born and lived there >from the 1870s
on. Lena's sister Jolan wed ERDELY. One of the GOLDMANN daughters, Fanny,
wed Armin POLATSCEKTheir three daughters were in Kosice during the Holocaust.
Emma and Jakab GELL:MAN died at Auschwitz but daughter Katoka survived, her
aunt Ilus [Ilona] and husban Lajos ROBERTS also survived. Her other aunt
Paula and husband Bela died. Jakab Gellman was a highly respected business
man with a leather business. If any one has come across any information on
these families I'd be most grateful if you'd contact me.

Researching names #hungary

Judy Petersen

If I'm not too late on this topic, I'd like to add the names and localities
that I'm researching:

STOESEL/STACEL, LICHT, KELLNER: Budapest, Gyor in Hungary, Pittsburgh and
Cleveland in the U.S.

WEISBERG: probably Hungary proper, as the family belonged to the Petofi
Society, a landsmanschaft. Married into Branch #4 of the following family--

WEISS (or its variants): Michalovce, Cemerne/Varanno, Presov in Slovakia,
Szuerthe (Strumkovka) in Ukraine and probably other towns in that same
general area. I am researching 6 branches of this very large family, 4 of
whom I have definitively linked together as the children of Volf/Zev
(William) Weiss and Gutel (Gertrude) HOROWITZ Weiss, both born abt. 1820.
All 6 branches came to the US and settled primarily in New York (city/state)
and Cleveland, OH.
Branch #1: Max (Majer), son of Volf and Gutel, born abt. 1839 in
Cemerne, married Hanna BERNSTEIN, children Herman, Arthur, William, Philip,
Louis, Bertha, Kitty, Jacob (Jack), Sarah, all born between 1865 and 1891.
Two of the women married into families named GOLDSMITH and NEWMAN.
Branch #2: Henry (Chaim), son of Volf/Gutel, born abt. 1845 in Cemerne,
married Katherine ?, no children.
Branch #3: Albert (Avrum), son of Volf/Gutel, born abt. 1848 in Cemerne,
first wife Marie KOHN, children William W. (b. 1880), Harry H. (b. 1883) and
Archie (b. 1887). Second wife, Lizzie Krause, no children.
Branch #4: Hannah, daughter of Volf/Gutel, born abt. 1849 possibly in
Kozma (I have birth records for the other 3 children but couldn't find
Hannah's in FHL records for Varanno/Cemerne). Married Abraham WEISS of
Szuerthe, unknown if he was a relative or not. Children Cili, Yakob, Louis,
William, Haskell, Mollie, Katie, Henry, all born between 1859 and 1880. The
women married into families named WEINBERGER, WEISBERG and MORSE. Female
descendants of this family married into WALDMAN, LIPSHAY, SATZ, SCHWARTZ,
GOLDBERG, KABEL, SPERO, WERTHEIMER, AUSTIN, POST, STEINMAN, FERRO and SAUER
families.
Branch #5: Phillip (Shraga Feivel) WEISS b. abt. 1834, possibly in
Presov. First wife, Lina PACUBO (?), children Adolph, Katherine. Second
wife, Bertha KLEIN (b. Presov), children William, Emma, Lena, Rosie, Pearl,
Rachel (Rae), Blanche, Sarah, Morris, Arthur A. and Stella. The women
married into families named GREENFIELD, COHN, GREENBERG, RUBIN, MARKS,
SILVER, KARMIOLE, and DANN.
Branch #6: Moshe Ya'acov WEISS b. abt. 1845 m. Betti UNGERLEIDER,
children Louis b. 1865 (my greatgrandfather) and 4 daughters, first names
unknown. 3 of them married men by the names of A. JACOBSEN, PERLSTEIN, and
William GREENWALD. Louis' eldest daughter Minnie (my grandmother) married
into the STACEL family listed above. Another of Louis' daughters, Lillian,
married into Branch #4. Louis' wife was of the WEISBERG family listed above
and his brother-in-law also married into Branch #4.

The reason I postulate a connection between all six branches is 1) family
legend and 2) per his obituary, all of Louis Weiss's (my ggf) pallbearers
were >from the other branches.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated; I would also like to contact
descendants of these families to share information.

Thank you!
