I suppose I could go into twenty different towns and write Pikholz,
Pikholc, Pickholz, Pickholtz for every one of them, but it seems to me
more reasonable to do so justr for the major towns and to do "any" for
the rest. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

Israel P.

Is there any particular reasons that nice Galitzyaners are avoiding JGFF?

Re: Kievskie Gubernskie Vedomosti Project #ukraine

haflo <haflo@...>

Dear Fellow U SIG Members:

As you are probably aware, the Ukraine SIG is investigating the feasibility
of purchasing microfilm of the Kiev Gubernskie Vedomosti, in order to
translate relevant material & make it available on our website. This is
what we've learned so far.

There are 136 reels of microfilm.
In correspondence with the NYPL, we were given this information. The
Gubernskie Vedomosti is on hundreds of microfilm reels. It is too expensive
and almost impossible to make hard copies. They advised us to contact their
vendor Norman Ross Publishing for purchase of the material.

Norman Ross charges about $100 a film, although if you buy the whole set at
once, there's a discount:

Kievskie gubernskie vedomosti, 1838-1917
136 reels of 35mm microfilm -- $11,000

Obviously, we're not able to buy $11,000 worth of microfilm. For now, I'm
putting out an urgent call to our New York members to do some voluntary
library legwork. We need people to look through the available microfilm, &
create an index that describes the contents of each reel. With such an
index, we can then determine our priorities, & work on the most useful
reels in order of relevance. Once we have a descriptive reference point,
we'll have a better idea about how to proceed. (Let me know, too, if one of
you can act as team leader to coordinate this effort.)

If anyone else can give us some ideas on how we can undertake this project
more efficiently & less expensively, I'd be very grateful for your
suggestions. It's alright to share your answers with our mailing list, & I
look forward to any & all helpful thoughts about the project.

Sincerely,
Florence Elman

Re: Looking for SCHNEIDER in Rybotycze #galicia

Alexander Sharon <a.sharon@...>

Rhoda,

There is a website in Polish at:
http://republika.pl/zamki_w_polsce/K/KPR/Rybotycz.htm

delaing with the knight castle (or whatsever have left out of this castle)
in Rybotycze.

Next website describes that Rybotycze used to be a Jewish town, and that
Jewish cemetery is located in Rybotycze.

http://www.workjoy.com.pl/pmap_gos/wiahor/wiahor.html

Generally, Rybotcze was a typical Jewish shtetl in the midst of Ukrainian
population during Poland interwar period. There were 314 Jewish souls out of
1277 of total genearl population.

Nearest railway station was in Nizankowice. Shtetl administration centre was
in Dobromil, on the other (east) side of the San River. Interesting is that
all the land property around shtetl were own by the Academy of Art from
Krakow.

There is not listing for SCHNEIDER in town as per Poland Business Directory.

Few printed Jewish names are:

SANDAHAUS, STECHER, ZINS, RUBINFELD, LIESER, DWULIT, STIFEL, AMSTER,
ROTTENBERG, GLUCK, STEIGER, STERNBACH, LOWNHECH

Regards,

Alexander Sharon

Search for Czwal family information #galicia

Lois Schwall <lschwall@...>

Dear Members;

We are searching for information about the Czwal (now Schwall) family.
They lived in Rzeszow (Reisha) around 1900. The father was David, who
married Regina Messer. David had a small business, probably a store of
some sort. David and Regina had four children, Samuel, Benjamin, Maria
(Manya) and Etka (Esther?).

David brought his oldest son, Samuel, to Boston around 1900, but
returned to Rzeszow with his son after a short period. Samuel later
went to Boston alone as a teen aged boy and became a US citizen in
1912. Another son, Benjamin, studied medicine in Vienna and served as a
physician in the Kaiser's army during WW1, spending some time in
Bratislava. The site of his later medical practice is not known.
Around 1939/1940, he said he was going to flee into Russia and he was
not heard >from again. The daughter Manya (Maria) served as a nurse
during WW1 and was given a medal for distinguished service in Vienna in
1915. She married and moved to Berlin, where her husband, Josef
Fleischer, was an insurance agent. Manya resumed nursing at the Jewish
Hospital in Berlin during the late 1930's, at which time she sent their
only child, Lucy, to live with Samuel's family in Boston. She and her
husband came to the US in 1941, via Portugal. Almost nothing is known
about the younger Czwal daughter, Etka (Esther?), who was not heard from
after this time.

David and Regina Czwal may have come into Rzeszow >from an outlying
area. We wonder if they modified the family name because we can find no
records of any Czwals. The descendants of Samuel Czwal (Schwall) would
very much appreciate any information you may be able to provide.

Thank you.
