Postal mark - England? Viewmate #general

Hilary Henkin <hilary@...>

Hi, everyone!
I have a photo-postcard; the kind with a personal photo on the front, and
postcard markings on the back - ready to mail.
I think the photo is my grandmother's now-long-lost brother Hirsh/Herman
RINCOVER. I suspect he was in England or Palestine at the time, possibly
during the 1920's or 1930's. The only writing says, "My father Herman
before his death."

Since the card was never actually mailed, the only other clue is the
printing in the corner where the stamp would've been stuck. Sort of
a "postal mark".

I've uploaded a scan of that postal mark to Viewmate #329. Might one of
you be able to confirm the country of origin, and possible time period?
The URL is
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview104.html#vm329

Thank you to all who investigate my query! Please reply privately.

Genearl in the Czar's Army from Moscow- Saltikov, Shaltakoff #belarus

Diane Jacobs <kingart@...>

To all,
I welcome any suggestions on how to locate a Russian general
in the Czar's Army before the 1890s, Jewish or non-Jewish.

The Shaltakoff, Saltikuff, Saltykow or Saltikov (any variety of spellings
is possible) family married into my Singman family in l904 after
emigrating in thel890s. According to their family story they have
a Russian General >from Moscow (either born there, or stationed there)
in their family.

I have found out with the help of others and online information that
the name is quite common in Russia, that there are members of
the royal family with that name, princes, counts and two generals
headquartered in Moscow. Towns, bridges and the National Library
of St. Petersburg have this name.

Now I want to know how I can go about finding the link between a
Jewish family in New York City and a Russian family >from Moscow.

Any and all suggestions are most welcome.

In response to Linda Higgins post on January 20th (Belarus SIG), it is
almost impossible to find records of soldiers in the Czar's army unless
they
were officers or in some special branch or cadre. The records that exist
are
in the state (national) archives in either St. Petersburg or Moscow.

Quoting Linda Higgins <maninthemoon2k@email.msn.com>:

I have been told that my great-grandfather was a professional
soldier in the
czar's army. I have no idea whether this is fact or fiction.
Is anyone
aware of how I could possibly determine where these records
are kept or how
I can gain access to them.
Linda, this is almost certainly true. Jewish youths were routinely
drafted into the Czar's army for 25 years (they were called
janissaries). This not only solved a labor problem, it ensured that
they weren't around to marry and father more Jews. If the young man
resisted, his family was killed and their house burned to the ground.
Elaborate and corrupt schemes resulted in many shtetls, in which rich
families would pay poor ones to have their son assume the draftee's
identity and take his place in the army. The rabbis denounced this as
unethical and immoral. You can read more about this in "A Century

A needle in a haystack, huh?

Maybe I can make that haystack a bit smaller. Go to
http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi . There you can search
for all deaths in California >from 1940-1997.

Please note that if it indicates Trinity County, that may be incorrect.
Many of my family who died in Los Angeles had "Trinity" listed as county of death.

Happy searching!

Hello

Does any one know about Shamir asking to be buried at the feet of a man
by the name of Feinstein who was some kind of hero?

I visited the grave and wonder what the history of this story is and
where this Feinstein was born.

Thank you for any information you might offer.

Shalom,

When in Poland last September, I visited Chelmno, the site of the first
death camp in Poland. In the small museum there, I saw a modest booklet
which has the title (in Polish): "They were doomed to death" - about the
history of the jews of Pabianice, 1794-1998, written by Roman Peska, a
local Polish writer.
What most shocked me are some photographs in the booklet, of the last
death march of the Jews, 6 pictures >from a collection of old photographs
done and kept by the local scouts movement of Pabianice.

The result is a web page... URL:
