It would be appropriate to take back to Alytus, for permanent display in that town, a set of photographs taken by an entering German soldier as the Germans entered that "first Lithuanian town" in their Eastward advance in 1941. Prominent in this series of snapshots are photos of "Lithuanian patriots" liberating the shoe factory of the Jewish owners. The photos of these "patriots" displaying their "booty" should be prominently displayed. Is the Vice Mayor offering to restore these factories to their rightful owners?

I saw these photographs at the National Archives' Photographic Archive in
Washington DC.

SAD in Lithuania #lithuania

HarryG123@...

Dear Litvak SIG:

I was recently lucky enough to find my great-grandfather's death, will and
probate records in a FHL film of Transvaal Supreme Court documents: MOSES
ABRAHAM COHEN died in JOHANNESBURG on June 27, 1947. In the death notice his place of birth is listed as SAD, Lithuania, in 1860.
In the will, he left sums of money to "the children of my late sister, TAUBE KRAMER [born Cohen] of SAD, LITHUANIA" and "to the children of my late sister, SARAH LEAH SIVE of SAD, LITHUANIA". He also left something "To my friend and relation CHANE LURIE of SAD, LITHUANIA."

I had previously been led to believe that this GGF was >from PUSALOTAS, not
SAD. He was married to SARAH STEIN of PUSALOTAS, apparently in PUSALOTAS.

My question to the SIG is which shtetl is SAD? ShtetlSeeker comes up with
two matches for SAD, modern day SEDA (Siady) and SETA (Shat/Shaty). Do any
of you have a sense of which of these would have landed up being called "SAD" in South Africa? Do any of you recognize the family names COHEN, KRAMER, SIVE and LURIE >from SAD?

Thanks

I don't think this should be viewed as controversy. It is instead a =
pooling
of information of how Hungarian Laws changed over-time, the affect on =
our
ancestors names, and legal documents. I think a compilation of such
information overtime will help us all in our research.

mod.- when there aren't too many messages to the sig I think it wouldn't
be burdensome to have some off topic discussion (as some may consider
these messages). However, while we have a very liberal interpretation of
what is considered Hungarian Jewish family research, we should not stray
too far.LS
