Dear friends,
some may consider this message to be slightly off the list's interest,
but then it is something that we all really care about. Anyway, I
will proceed without much ado: does anyone know (dealt with) of a
respectable company/person who could attend to a grave in St. Petersburg
(naturally for a fee)?

I know that list does not promote particular companies, so feel free to
respond privately.

Thank you

Oral History Project #belarus

Dear Friends,

I think this may be of interest to those of you considering taking
advantage of Jewishgen’s Shtetlschleppers’ programme.

Often when visiting shtetls in Belarus you will come across survivors
of the pre-Holocaust era. These people are our last living link with
the past.

Over and over again I have seen visitors learn about life before the
war and, incredibly, even meet people who knew their relatives.

I have been compiling oral histories for over ten years. I have placed
an example of one of the interviews in our oral history section which
begins at
http://eejhp.tripod.ca/ohp.htm
It’s fairly long, even though it’s only an extract, but I think you
will find it worthwhile. It gives you a hint of the kind of rich
experience you will have when you visit Belarus and meet some of your
people.

I really urge you to visit. I know you will find it rewarding and it
means so much to members of the pre-Holocaust generation. They will
not be with us for long. Terrible living conditions and the hardships
they have had to endure are bringing their lives to a close. They want
to share their past with you. This will not be an opportunity you will
have for long.

Best regards,
Frank

Re: Hungarian Cemetery, Newark, NJ #general

Herb <herbiem@...>

The telephone company would not be able to give you the information you
seek. Most likely your relatives are buried in a Hungarian section of
one of the several Jewish cemeteries located Street in Newark---Grove
Street, Talmud Torah, and Union Field Cemeteries. Call 973-373-0144.

You may be able to get more information >from the death certificates
which usually lists the cemetery.

Another option, which I have used, is to call Sanford Epstein, Inc.
For a nominal fee, this grave maintenance service company will locate
and film the gravestone. 908 245-7100.

indicate that there is no such listing in Newark or in the surrounding
area.

Eve Clyne <Eclyne@...>

Two of my uncles changed their name when they were in the British army
during the second world war and in a non- communicating way they both chose
different surnames neither telling the other till they came home on leave.
So the surname Macofsky changed to Mason by one uncle and Miatland by the
second uncle.

"Sunshine" #general

Peter Garas <pgaras@...>

OK everyone tell the truth.

a) who has seen the movie "Sunshine"?
b) how many of you have a family history which is similar to and/or
better than the one portrayed in the movie?
c) how many of you are now wishing *You* had the idea to put *Your*
family information into a movie?

Seriously, as someone with a family history that could compete with the
one used in the film, all the way through to having a family member who
was a national class fencer to having one who received the Signum Laudis
medal I can honestly say I liked the movie as it brought home a few
interesting thoughts.

In Hungary it didn't matter whether you believed in the left or right of
politics, it didn't matter if you fought for or against the monarchy, or
if you were a national hero or not, nor if you converted to Christianity
or remained a devout believer, at the end of the day what you were was a
*Jew* and that is how you were treated.

Anyone with some thoughts on the impact of films like this on our
genealogical experiences?

Just asking

Peter Garas

An early Canadian death notice #general

Harry Dodsworth <af877@...>

I was reading the Montreal Gazette yesterday - for 1827 :-)
when I noticed this death notice:

Montreal Gazette Thursday evening, August 16, 1827

DIED, on Wednesday morning, Mrs Dorothea Judah, widow of the late
Aaron Hart, Esquire, aged 82 years. Her remains were conveyed to
Three Rivers on board the Waterloo Steam boat for interment in the
family burying ground.

It was interesting that steamboats were operating on the St. Lawrence
River although it would be another twelve years before they started to
cross the Atlantic.

Dorothea Judah was the wife (and cousin) of Aaron Hart and was probably
born in London, England. She married Aaron Hart in London in 1768.

Aaron Hart was a merchant and landowner in Three Rivers (now Trois
Rivieres). He was the patriarch of the Hart dynasty, who, besides their
business activities, fought for, and finally succeeded in obtaining, full
civil rights for Jews in Canada.

The family story takes almost two chapters in 'A Coat of Many Colours',
Two Centuries of Jewish Life in Canada, by Irving Abella.

Enumeration districts #general

Mike Fischer <miketran@...>

Through Ancestry.com, I subscribed to the on line 1920 census. It is very
nice, but I have to figure out which district I should be looking for or
I will be looking at zillions of files. Is there anywhere on the Internet
that I can find out which district certain addresses would appear ? I
really don't want to order films or wait till I can get into the Archives
or the NY Public Library.

1910 Ohio Census - TRAPUNSKY record #general

mtrap@...

Hi All,

I have a question regarding a record I found on Ancestry.com >from the 1910
Ohio Census (Cuyahoga, Cleveland County).

The record is for the family of a Louis FRIEDMAN, his wife - Minna,
daughter - Rosa, son - Nathan, and Louis’ brother-in-law Ike TRAPUNSKY
who was 18 at that time and was born in Russia. This is the only
TRAPUNSKY/TRAPUNSKI record I have come across so far where the person
wasn’t related to me.

My question is: Given the small amount of information, how can I go about
tracking down additional records and/or information on this family. I
don’t have any idea when Minna FRIEDMAN or Ike TRAPUNSKY passed away, or
if they were even still living in Cleveland (or Ohio for that matter) at
that time.

I was also wondering if the 1910 Ohio Census records would give
additional information on Minna’s and Ike’s parents. And if the records
do have that information, can anyone suggest how I could go about ordering
the record.

Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much,

Michael Trapunsky
