Help to obtain copy from Kolo? #poland

Kirsten Gradel <kmgradel@...>

In mid September I found in JRI-databases a record >from Kolo, Poland that
with near certaincy is a link to an unknown part of our PRASZNICER
family. I ordered that film - and several others - for Kolo but have not
yet received them. It takes 6-8 months to get ordered films to our little
FHC.

Patience is not my strongest point, so the 4 months since have streched
it to the limit.

Is there one of you out there in cyberspace, who has the Kolo, BDM
1869-77, film 1191088 in your local FHC? If yes, I would be extremely
grateful if you would help me with a photocopy of a marriage record >from
that film. I will reimburse your costs with an international reply-coupon.

Thanking you in advance

Re: Surnames in Cuba and South America - origins? #general

Dear Gail,
The custom may have started in Spain and today is not only practiced by
those with Hispanic surnames, but those raised in Spanish speaking
countries. Therefore my Argentine born sister-in-law is Julia Cohen de
Cohen. This American married to an Argentine compromised (note the hyphen
in the signature) . Perhaps the family you are researching originated in
Spain and kept the custom in Latvia. Carol Blumenthal-Cohen

National Archives of Australia #general

come@...

I just wanted to let you all know that the National Archives of
Australia is a valuable resource particularly if your relatives came
here as a post war immigrant. Their web address is
http://www.naa.gov.au
Go to "explore record search" 3/4 of the way down the page, click
search, then click "guest". I have been able to receive copies of
documents such as Application for Naturalization Forms, Incoming
Passenger Cards with photographs, Stat. Decs, passports, etc all with
lots of information and all filled out by the individuals themselves.
Once you find your relative, you fill out an online form asking for what
is available on the person. The National Archives will mail it to you.
They state that you may have to pay photocopying costs.

I must also say that there are relatives of mine who should be listed
here but are not so I would say the Archives are presently in the
process of making this information available.

Please direct any questions you may have to the Archives.

Re: Canadian Immig records #general

Dear Miriam:

The 1901 census for Canada has much valuable genealogical information, such
as names and birthdates for all family members, birthplaces and also
sometimes year of immigration as well as occupation, etc.

I occasionally go to the National Archives here in Ottawa and I'd be happy
to look up this record for you. It might be a while before I go again (the
weather is not nice here !), so if you are still interested in getting the
information in a month or so, get back in touch with me.

Zibel Family/Montreal #yiddish

Larry Freund and Gloria Berkenstat Freund <glory1@...>

My late uncle's recollections of World War One-era Montreal include the
Jewish theater vaudeville act of a "Papa and Mama and M'amselle ZIBEL
(ZEIBEL?)." ("They would sing on the stage; they were well known on the
stage.")

Does that ring a bell for anyone? That is, who they were?

Thanks for your help.

Seeking Allen/Alan SMITH, Brooklyn #general

smthted@...

Dear group,

This is a shot in the dark. I am seeking a cousin and possibly through him,
a branch of my father's family. Allen/Alan SMITH was married and living in
Brooklyn in the early 1960s. If he is alive today, he would be in his late
60s or early 70s. His father was Sam SMITH and his mother was Esther LAND
SMITH, both originally >from New Haven, CT but deceased in the New York
City area. Allen/Alan had a married sister Eleanor in Philadelphia. I have
searched the FTJP and JGFF without result, and the latest option,
Jewsearch.com, turned up a nonlead in New Zealand no less (one of the
hazards
of being a Smith). Does any of this ring a bell, and any suggestions for
next steps for finding this needle in this particular haystack?

Please reply privately.

Thanks,
Theodore Smith
