Searching the Web last night I found a reference to him as living in Western
Pa. in the 1870 census. Born in England. Right person. The next reference
for him was the Texas State census of 1880. Makes sense but I am nto ready
to buy a disc >from a commercial firm. Can someone who receives this be so
kind as to check the Texas Census for 1880 for all data about him. He was
born in 1838 and came to the U.S. >from England. Many thannks, Ed Kroll,

New Year's message #yizkorbooks

Joyce Field <jfield@...>

Dear Yizkor Book Project:

Many people, touched as we were, have written to ask about the
identity of the person who wrote the Christmas Eve email to the
Yizkor Book Project that Susan King quoted in her New Year's Eve
message. I wrote him to ask if he would mind if we revealed his name
and email address. He has indicated that he would be happy to engage

in a discussion on Yedbabne or any other topic with any one who
writes. This remarkable young man's name is Marek Jozwiak, and his
email address is <marek71@poczta.onet.pl>.

Many of you have also written to ask for information on Yedwabne. You
can find the yizkor book translation at
http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/jedwabne/Yedwabne.html as well as the
translation of the Polish newspaper article by Andrzej Kaczynski,
"Burning Alive," published May 5, 2000 by "Rzeczpospolita," which
caused a sensation in Poland. The introduction by Morlan Ty Rogers
puts the article in historical perspective.

Dear Genners
My grandmother, Brocha Szaraczkiewicz, >from Lomza / Zambrow landed at
Ellis Island in 1907. Family myth tells that one of her children died
while en route on the ship. Any advice on how to locate information on
this event, or the ship name and manifest, using just her name?

Bialystok-Shtetl or Not????????/ #general

BABYCAT3 <babycat3@...>

I understand that Bialystok was/is quite a large area back in the days of
my ancestors. Would the shtetl have been Bialystok itself (I presume
probably not), or can anyone tell me the names of some of the shtetls that
were within the Bialystok limits or just on the outskirts of it? I am
aware of the towns Krinki and Orla, but while I still have Where We Once
Walked on loan, I would love to make a list of the shtetls for future
reference in the Bialystok vicinities since I have no clue as to what
shtetls my families came from. I am not even sure if I am using the book
correctly. My pggrandfather lived on Ul. Bransky 14 in Bialystok, might
that street have been part of a specific shtetl area?
Thank you so much.

Quebec Landin #general

Mervyn Lakin <mervl@...>

My father, Samuel Leikach(became Lakin at the border), landed in Quebec
City in 1921 and took the train to Detroit on his was to Marcellus,
Michigan. When I became a US Citizen in 1963, having been born in Canada,
the Immigration official who gave me my oral exam and happened to be
Jewish, asked me my roots. He sent downstairs and retrieved my father's
original papers when he applied for citizenship to the US.

I just received a booklet which lists 3500 names for the above unclaimed
accounts. I cannot do a lookup for anyone, but it came >from the World
Jewish Congress and for further details either call 1-800-957-3203
or write to International Commission...POBox 1163..Wall St. Station..
New York, NY 10268 or go online to www.icheic.org

I have no direct interest in this, but it was sent to me by someone who
thought it would be of interest to someone on Jewishgen.

Every 6 months or so I post this request !

Proir to 1795 Jews were forbidden to live in Lomza - with the coming of
the Prussian administration [ Lomza and the surrounding area becoming
part of New East Prussia] .

Does anyone have any information of how and >from where Jews came to settle

Many thanks

Berea Shul #southafrica

Louis Zetler <zetler@...>

The striking feature of the Berea shul was the huge angle's wings on the
sides of the aron hakodesh.

The shul was known for the late Rabbi Aloy, its famous chazonim (Dudu Fisher
started out his carrier there) and choir.

I used to be the chairman of the nearby Etz Chayim shul. Sadly, the area has
degenerated quickly over the past few years as the Jews moved out. Areas
like Hillbrow and Berea have become "no go" areas for whites.
