AOL 6.0 Users can respond to individual messages by using (AOL Services) -
(Internet) - (NewsGroups) and selecting soc.genealogy.jewish as one of the
newsgroups. This message was generated in that fashion. Seems to work OK
for me!

Stephen Rockower
Searching: ROCKOWER,(RAKOWER, ROKOVER, RAKOVER, etc) SPRITZLER, STEIN,
COLEMAN, SABLOSKY, SHARPE, GOLDENBERG

MODERATOR NOTE: This is correct. The problem with AOL 6.0 is **only** the
e-mail facility, which cannot send mail in the plain text mode required by
the software used by the JewishGen Discussion Group.

Today, my sister discovered an embroidered sampler which had been
placed in a picture frame behind another picture. The "outside"
picture has been in our family for over 70 years and no one knew
the sampler was underneath.
The only portion I can help with is the middle section written in Hebrew.

It says: L'Shana Tovah Tikutanu
"May you be inscribed for a good year"

Hope this helps.

We are, of course, hoping it might provide some clues to our
family's history, but we are unable to read it. The writing on
the sampler appears to be in German, with Hebrew or Yiddish
characters in the center of the sampler. It is dated 1891.

I have posted photos of the sampler at

http://www.ancestornews.com/sampler.htm in hopes that someone
can help us translate the words/symbols. We consider this a
major find, and are hopeful that it will lead us into new
research areas. Thanks in advance for your help.
I talked with a German-speaker, and he says this looks to him
like a wedding gift, and the two names on the sides are
probably the names of people who were married:
Glik and Secenzuh.

He did agree that the bottom says New Year.

Up to the early 1950s, American Export Lines ran fortnightly service
between the United States and Haifa. On each trip, the stops were as
follows: New York, Naples, the Piraeus, Beirut, Haifa, Alexandria, Palermo
or Syracuse in Sicily (I am not sure anymore), Naples, Punta del Gada,
Halifax, New York. The shipping line's records probably exist.

Lodz 1945 Survivors - David SZAJNZYCHT #general

David Lewin <davidlewin@...>

I hope you can help me with this search.

David Szajnzycht died in Miami in 1997. He had no children. I have found
no Probate information. I am trying to obtain birth records >from Poland,
but do not know whether the Polish Archives will be helpful.

I have found Szajnzycht matches in the Lodz Ghetto Register at the
Washington Holocaust Memorial , which has four people with this last name.

So, somewhere in this world there may be people who are related to "my"
David Szajnzycht.

Please note that the name is spelled differently by different parts of the
SAME family:

Szejnsicht = Scheinsicht = Szajnzycht and so on.

Have you ever come across this name?

Do you know anyone, anywhere, whom I could ask about this please?

Is there a separate list with specific Lodz interest?

Thank you for any thought or response you may have.

Re: Zangwil #general

Alter & Dina Ophir <alterdina@...>

From: <MBernet@aol.com>
Sanvil, Zangwil are names derived >from the Biblical name Shmuel (Samuel).
Israel Zangwill (1864-1926) was a highly renowned author and playwright,
in the UK and USA. He was also an ardent and active Zionist but broke
with Herzl and later fostered Jewish rural settlement in the USA--he
encoraged Jews to come to Galveston and settle in Texas.

I had always thought Zangvil was a Yiddish or old German name for a spice
(ginger? nutmeg?) but can't find it in my dictionaries. Does anyone know
what spice it is?
Zangwil is a spice, in Latin Zingilberaceae. Zangwil appears in yidish
and in Hebrew
Alter Ophir
