I must have been tired when I explained to a friend of mine in Denver, CO
about our Kurlander Verein cemetery project. She just sent me by email the
following information on the family KURLAND. Does this family belong to
anyone? Can we put them into our database?

1. At Mt. Nebo Cemetery
(a) Deborah Kurland died 6-23-90
(b) Eugene Kurland died 4-6-95
(c) Maurice Kurland died 8-10-70
(d) Rose Kurland died 11-27-80
2. At Golden Hill Cemetery
(a) Helen Frank Kurland died 10-95 at the age of 88
3. At Rose Hill Cemetery

Schelly Talalay Dardashti
Tel Aviv
dardasht@barak-online.net

DATE: Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001
TIME: 6:45 pm, forum; 7:30 pm ENGLISH lecture
PLACE: Matnas Neve Eliezer,
6 Sheshet HaYamim St. Tel Aviv
(Parking is easy)
SPEAKER: Dr. Karl Skorecki
Rambam Hospital, Haifa; and
Canadian Center for Molecular Biology, Technion
TOPIC: Genetic Archeology of Jewish Communities

The human genealogical project has shown quite clearly
that, on average, any two humans on the face of the
Earth differ by less than only 0.1% at the level of
their human genome sequence. Yet it is this tiny
difference which makes the genetic contribution to the
wonderful diversity of humanity.

While archeology uncovers aspects of human history,
analyzing relics left behind, genetic archeology digs
into the diversity of contemporary human genome to
unravel mysteries about past history.

Dr. Skorecki and his colleagues have applied analysis
of DNA markers to unravel geographic origins and historical
relationships among communities in the Jewish Diaspora.

He will provide a brief overview of the scientific
approach, a summary of some of the findings, as well as
their potential social and ethical implications.

Head of the department of nephrology at Rambam Medical
Center, Haifa; Dr. Skorecki also heads the Canadian
Center for Molecular Medicine Research, Technion, also
in Haifa.

He studied at the University of Toronto and Harvard
University, and served on the faculties of both Harvard
and UT. He has authored more than 100 articles, many
international presentations and has a distinguished
record of professional accomplishments.

He, wife Linda and their five children made aliyah in
August 1995 and live in the Haifa area.

Future JFRA meetings:
Sunday, Feb. 11 (ENGLISH)
Our special guest, Dr. Saul Issrof, JGSGB London UK,

Emil HERTZKA #general

harald blatterer <harryblatt@...>

Fellow researchers,

I am currently undertaking research on Emil Hertzka (1869-1932) who >from
1909 until his death was general director of the prestigious Viennese
music publishing house 'Universal Edition'.

I'm particularly interested in establishing whether there is a familial
connection between Emil Hertzka, the Viennese economist and sociologist
Theodor Hertzka and the German scholar Gottfried Hertzka. However, any
information regarding the geneology of all of the above persons would be
greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Harry Blatterer

I wrote theCentral State Historical Archives of Ukraine (City of Lviv)

Thank you. I have scanned the body of the letter and it can be viewed at:

Meretz, Yiddish name for Merkine, Lithuania #general

hennynow

Warmest thanks to Warren Blatt for responding so promptly to my query
regarding the shtetl of Meretz. For all you JewishGenners, the current
name is Merkine, in present-day Lithuania.

Warren also referred me to the following JewishGen site for the town,
which makes for fascinating reading and is illustrated by a number of
excellent photographs:

http://www.jewishgen.org/Shtetlinks/Meretch/meretch1a.html

This calls for a donation to JewishGen, right now.

LIEBES of Breslau and LEBUS of London #general

Harold Lewin <harmir@...>

Researchers of either names Liebes or Lebus will be interested in a letter
written by Hans Liebes of Breslau in November 1938. It was apparently found
while clearing out an office in London a few years ago and constitutes a
desperate but guarded appeal for help in exiting Germany. The letter
provides a wealth of family information and includes proof of the
connection between the two names.

Those interested should contact: Harold Lewin - Jerusalem
