ViewMate: Lipman -- a Hebrew name?
#general
A. E. Jordan
First thanks to everyone who looked at my VM posting #164. I did
not even have to post a notice about the picture. So many nice people must be looking there regularly because I must have gotten a dozen responses right away. Everyone agreed on one of the names as being Lipman. Does anyone recognize that as a Hebrew name? Maybe my Hebrew is more rusty because I don't recall Lipman. Thanks again. Searching: Philip BERNSTEIN & Jennie FALK: 1931 marriage
#general
LE01982@...
Seeking descendants for the following: Philip & Jennie BERNSTEIN
from the JewishGen "Rabbi Aaron Gorovitz Marriage Database" (inMassachusetts), there is a 21 June 1931 marriage recorded for Philip BERNSTEIN (age 32, asst. buyer, born in NYC) and Jennie Falk (age 30, saleswoman, born in Russia). Their addresses at the marriage were Allston, MA and Roxbury, MA respectively. The parents of this wedding couple, all born in Russia, are: David BERNSTEIN & Nettie ROSENHOLZ, and Abraham FALK & Bessie LEWIS. from a search of the SSDI for Massachusetts, there is a "Jennie BERNSTEIN(3 July 1900 to June 1972; residence at death was Lowell, MA)" whose birth year seems to be "fit" this 1931 marriage. Of course, it may be a pure coincidence. My grandfather, Mayer ROSENHOLZ (1870-1963), had a younger sister, named Nettie (DOB circa 1877; death date unknown), who married a "Mr. BERNSTEIN" (first name never known by me). Family 'lore' says that Nettie and Mr. BERNSTEIN (may have) had 5 children: Jessie, Rhoda, Helen?, and possibly 2 other sons - Philip BERNSTEIN may be one of these two. My "Mr. Bernstein" (hopefully this is the 'David' mentioned above) apparently worked for Swift & Company as a meat broker/salesman. While no death date is known for him, he certainly died before 1929 and may have died as early as 1909-10 in NYC. Nettie (as a widow) and her children lived in the late 1920s in Brooklyn with her father, Jacob ROSENHOLZ (1838- 1929). The ROSENHOLZ family is >from Kalvaria or Suwalki gubernia. Dear Adam.records, I have found a recording of the name of myfrom some very faded and partially destroyed family I'm sure that you'll get good answers with regard to the name. But with regard to the surname, I think that you should check further, to be sure if it is originaly SMITH or maybe it was SCHMIDT originally and got Anglicanism version later. Best regards. Udi Cain. Moderator: Where are you >from Udi?

Searching for information on this BERKOWITZ family. They lived
in New York City area (possibly Brooklyn.) at the turn of the century. This was my great-grandfather Louis Goodman's sister's family They lived here at the turn of the century and came >from Suwalki. Yetta's husband's name may have been BORKOWSKY. Louis Berkowitz married briefly to his cousin Lenore Freedman, but the marriage was annulled. They met at Aunt Lily and Uncle Sam Goldstein's wedding and eloped. I was told that most of them retired to Florida where they died. This information could be incorrect. I would like to hear >from anyone who knows of this family. Vivian E. Shore Zelvin, Eastchester, NY
