Sounding out "Icchok," I hear myself saying "Itzhok," obviously derived
from "Yitzhak."

Robert & Ena Jacobs <enabob@...>

Hello JewishGenners:
Following the message kindly posted by David Rosen,
I have tried several times, unsuccessfully, to access
my ancestral names in the Ancestry Database.
I used several variant spellings, to no avail.
These names all are shown in Alexander Beider's book
which I have viewed at Judaica Libraries.
Would it be appropriate to inform Ancestry of this situation?
Your input is appreciated.

Thanks! re:early marriages and Russian conscription #general

RMJaspan@...

Hello-

I want to thank everyone who responded to my postings regarding ages of early
marriages and conscription laws and insights. As is normal, there really is
no "norm" in either set of circumstances, only educated guesses can be given
by anyone once they have all the facts they can get their hands on. Thank you
all for helping formulate educated guesses for my (husband and daughter's)
family, who now seem like mine, as well!

Sincerely,

I'm glad to hear that someone else had the above problem. I was becoming very

UK naturalisations #general

david fielker <david@...>

My great-uncle, Culman STIEGLITZ, refused to be naturalised, saying that he
paid his taxes, why should be also pay to become British!

His second wife, Rachel, was born in Britain., but on marrying him
automatically became an 'Austrian' subject - Culman was born in Galicia.

During World War II Culman was interned on the Isle of Man for a period.
This obviously worried Rachel, who feared that as she was now a foreigner
and in fact an enemy alien the same would happen to her, and she applied to
be re-naturalised as a British subject.

Genealogically this was very useful, as I was able to see her file at the
Home Office, and it gave information about Culman, whose files were not on
record.

The Polish letter 'c' is pronounced 'ts' like the Hebrew tzadi. In Polish
language records it often replaces the German 'z' or tz'. For example, my
family name STIEGLITZ is sometimes recorded as STIGLIC.
