Kosice archives
#hungary
Marian Brown
Someone inquired about the Kosice archives and I don't have that e-mail
address so this message is going to the H-Sig. The archives have good material (I was just there), including some birth, marriage, and death records which have not been filmed by LDS. Also, they have the 1848 census of the Jews for some towns in the area and the 1857 and 1869 census records. It is worth writing to them, especially if you have the exact village or town for your family. Many Jews lived in small villages outside of Kosice proper. Marian Brown Cincinnati, Ohio

Where is Irving Roth?
#hungary
Momteller@...
I am searching for my grandfather's sister's family. Her name was Rose
Schwede and she married Eugene Roth in NYC. Their son, Irving Roth, would be in his 70's now probably. Where is he? The Roths had a daughter named Ethel but her name would have been changed if she married. I tried every Irving Roth in NYC and left messages. Rose was >from a small town near Szatmar (Sarkos Ujlak). Any help would be appreciated. Susan Stone Evanston, IL

It is probably Smolnik. There are two towns with the same name. One is in the
former Szepes County, Szomolnok in Hungarian and Schmo"lnitz in German. The other is in the former county of Zemple'n, U'jszomolnok or Szmolnik in Hungarian. Good luck, Attila Rona

All the information I have is coming >from Pest or Budapest. I am not certain
where Pinkas Philip Grunhut was born, but when he married Nanette (Netti) Steiner and they had seven children I know of. Katalin (cc 1845-?), who married Mano Kohn. Rosine (1851-?), who married Adolf Kohn. Albert (1853-1896) my Great-grandfather who married Rozalia Feder (1861 - ?). Mor (1858-?). Henrik (1862-?), who married Matild Blau (1863-?) and had at least three children; Kornelia, Jolan and Pal Samuel. Izidor (1864-?) who married Maria Stein (1868-?) and they had at least three children; Roza, Leo and Angela. Albert and Rozalia had seven children; Nandor (1883-?), Hugo (1884-1889), Ernesztina, my grandmother (1887-1971), Frida (1889-?), Geza (1892-1892), Margit (1893-1895) and Erzsebet (?-?) who married Otto Fogler-Frigyesi. Are we related? Anybody? Attila Rona

If your quest for a used copy is not successful, I got a new one from
Pannonia Bookstore (all books Hungarian) in Toronto, Canada. It was not very expensive and I ordered it over the phone. Debbi

Nyiregyha'za is the proper name of the town. Mormon Family Center must have
record until 1895. Hanukne' should be the correct spelling. The wife of Peter Hanuk would be Hanuk Pe'terne' in Hungarian. Attila Rona

I saw it in Hungary in the summer. Try any Hungarian book store in the US.
