Ukraine--Kiev--"Gold"?
#general
Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>
After posting a message to JewishGen, I have been solicited by
a person in Ukraine who stated that perhaps some of the people on my family tree (>from Ukraine) had money and gold confiscated during WWII. In particular, he wrote: All information about victims that have been received as result of use of author method is a private property. We can send you information concerning each person indicated above, if you pay for the information. Thereafter, he faxed me pages stating his intention to search. Finally, he sent me e-mail stating that--surprise, surprise--he had found records for most of the surnames of interest to me (as I have them simply listed below). He asked me to send money to "complete the search." (By the way, none of my family ever lived in Kiev!) Last year, when I wrote directly to the Kiev Archives, this same person sent me a fax stating, essentially, "I have found records for you. Please send money." Is this a scam? Is he just hoping that someone will send money? I don't know. Last year, after he sent a fax regarding my Kiev Archives search, I posted a message on JewishGen asking if anyone knew him or could vouch for him. Not one person responded in the affirmative. Each time I have written a specific message to this person, asking for any details on his work, I have simply received in return another message asking for money. I do not wish to cast ill-will towards anyone. If you have been solicited (as have, I've heard, at least a dozen other JewishGen writers) then you will need to evaluate his messages on your own. I have no information that conclusively proves that he is not offering a reputable and valuable service. need help with shtetl name in Poland/Germany
#general
Paul D. Shipman <pship@...>
I am trying to find a place of origin for my great great grandmother, Hannah
Rubinson, nee GOLDBERG. A note written by my great grandmother about her mother says the following: "Hannah Goldberg, born 1860 in Neustadt-Schwerwicht, Province of Poland, State of Schovalk." Given her age, her penmanship and my interpretive skills, there may be something a bit off here. My great grandmother was born in the U.S. and probably didn't have a great command of the geography or language she was invoking with this note. The 1900 U.S. census records Hannah's birthplace simply as "Germany." I would be most grateful for any help or direction you could give me on deciphering this birthplace. town/ship?

Drew Hershkowitz <dhershko@...>
My great grandparents (Samuel HERSKOVICZ & Bella GELB) were married in a
place translated as Elmish (or Almash?), Hungary in 1903. Does this ring a bell? After that, they came to NY and started having children in 1905. Can anyone tell me: 1) Does this town exist? 2) What port might they have left >from and which ship(s)? Thanks, Drew Hershkowitz dhershko@aol.com Surnames: HERSHKOWITZ, HERSKOVICZ USA, Hungary LANTON USA, Poland VERNICK USA, Russia, Canada EDELMAN USA MENDELSOHN Poland

Dear Mark,
Could it possibly be a variant spelling of the town Zolkiew? My pgf was >from a little shtetl right next to Zolkiew, which is about 30 Km NE Lviv.......the town was orignally a private town, owned by the Zolkiew family........they also owned another town of the same name, near Lublin......the one near Lviv has a famous old synagogue built in the fortress style, and some famous Rabbi's lived in the area......when Ukraine was taken over by the Soviets, they changed the name to Nesterov, after a famous Russian scientist, but the original name is now used..........Jane Lowenkron Foss
