question about mailings
#hungary
Gabor Hirsch <hirsch@...>
A humble question, is it necessary to send half a dozen email inside a
period of few hours (5 mails >from Sa. 01:34 to Sa. 02:26) , with very short messages. May be the message is one or two lines the in each mail repeated information about SIG / H-SIG is about 8 lines. We are complaining because of slow transmitions on the data-highway and at the same time we are slowing it down with unnecessary repetitions. If you want to answer different mails in one mail only, you can indicate it in the subject line with x-different infos. I would like your comment. Best regards Gabor Hirsch mod.-I agree with Gabor. I am also requesting that each respondant to a posting take a few seconds and edit the orginial message prior to sending back a response. Don't forget to eliminate the "signature" lines at the bottom of each message since they will be repeated in the response. People don't generally see the duplication of the unedited responses since I try to eliminate these extraneous items. However, it is a time consuming task to do so many. LS

Identifying a "Jewish" costume

David Mandel <dcmandel@...>
I have uploaded a photograph of my grandmother, Lena Ehrenreich Mandel, to the
ViewMate site. The photo was taken around 1895 in New York or Scranton, PA. My grandmother is wearing a very unusual dress. It is decorated with images of playing cards, an image of a hand holding five playing cards, and it has coins sewn onto it. My grandmother's hair is waist-length and has been pulled over her right shoulder. It's a very strange photograph. I would enjoy hearing from anyone who might know the origin of such a dress and the circumstances inwhich it may have been worn. The ViewMate identifier is VM082. When are JRI-Pl -PSAcontributors eligible to the entire file of indexes for their town ?
#poland
Nicole Berline <nberline@...>
from several messages like the one below, I understand that ,for some towns, the JRI-Pl -PSA contributors are eligible to the entire Excel file of indexes for their town . Why is this policy not followed with all towns ? As Hadassah Lipsius explained in her message about Cesztochowa, being able to search through the whole file, using various key words, is much more efficient that just searching by name . ( Hadassah explained that she had the opportunity of searching through the whole Cesztochowa file as she was doing the quality control for it) Subject: Piatek Vital Records - Great Newsdatabase will be $709. Researchers contributing a minimum of $50 will be eligible to receive a copy ofthe Excel spreadsheets that include the entire index of Piatek birth, marriage, and deathrecords. RINGGOLD and Land & Deed Records
#poland
The Kendrick's <kendrickkreation@...>
Hi!
It's taken almost a year, but I do believe we have the confirmed surname of our RING family prior to immigration to the United States. The RING's of America most likely were the RINGGOLD's of Austria. Thursday, I was contacted by a link to the family who said, "the original surname was RINGGOLD." Through numerous searches today I have located a John RINGGOLD who lived at 13 Kirkpatrick St., Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA. This document shows him living at this address in 1890 - 1891. Although this may be a coincidence, letters >from my grandmother to my grandfather in my possession show grandpa living at 128 Kirkpatrick St., Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA >from c. 1912-1917. Relatives say at one time, a member or members of the RING/RINGGOLD family owned an entire block in Pittsburgh. To me it this is all worth investigating with thoroughness. How might I locate land & deed records for the property at 13 and 128 Kirkpatrick St. for the years 1890 - 1891 and 1912 to learn who the owners were. If anyone knows the correct address to write for this information, or if anyone might have access to these records, please contact me privately. Your help might just break-through a 25 year old brick wall. Also, if anyone has access to Pittsburgh city directories for the above years I would be most appreciative of a lookup. Thank you for your time and any assistance. Nancy Ring-Kendrick Daytona Beach, FL mailto:kendrickkreation@mindspring.com

A Success Story
#general
Meryl Goldberg <meryl-chicago@...>
How to begin. First of all let me thank Hadassah Lipsius of JRI-Poland for
all her help in the past year trying to track down my family >from Warsaw. Second of all, let me tell all of you not to give up. The littlest clue will lead you to treasure. A little over a year ago I started to put together a book for my family on our history. I knew quite a bit about my mgm's family and where they came >from in the Ukraine. My mgf's family was a mystery to me. I knew he had been born in Warsaw around 1890 but that was about it. I knew he had brothers and sisters but for some reason we had no contact with them for over 50 yrs. Our original name was Gerkowicz but it had been changed to Gerrick. Through the phone book and then Jewishgen I had located family in the Chicago area where I am >from and in Texas and California. That in itself was a blessing but there was more to come. My Chicago cousin told me about one of my grandfather's brothers that hadn't immigrated to U.S. when the rest of the family did. He had stayed in Warsaw. None of my grandfather's daughters had ever heard of this brother but my cousin was sure he existed. I tried to track him down through JRI-Poland with Hadassah's help but to no avail. I did find a listing for him in the Warsaw cemetery but there the lead ended. One day surfing the net I came across the Holocaust Memorial site in Washington, D.C. As a last chance I sent them an e-mail asking if they had anyone registered there by the name of Gerkowicz >from Warsaw. They e-mailed me back that they had one man registered. They couldn't tell me any more but sent me a form to fill out that they would then send to him. If he wanted to contact me, he would. This was a few months ago. Well...this man called a few weeks ago and he is my cousin. His father was my grandfather's brother. He is 86 yrs old and a wonderful man. I sent him a letter with pictures of our family. This morning his daughter called me. They are so excited that we contacted them. Hopefully we will get together in the coming months. The point is...don't give up. Follow every clue and idea that you have. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. This will be the best one that I have ever had. "Jim Bennett" <bennett@coral.co.il> wrote in message
Here's a speculation, based on my experience: The Hebrew name YochevedThere is probably a bit of confusion in your speculation, Jim. Polish Queen Jadwiga (1374-1399, ruled >from 1384 till 1399), was the daughter of Louis I, King of Hungary and Poland (Polish: Ludwik Wegierski) from the Andegawen dynasty. She was canonized very recently (1997) by the"Polish" Pope Jan Paul II. Queen Jadwiga married in 1385 Lithuanian Grand Prince Jagiello (Iogaillas) which lead to the estblishment of the Jagiellonian dynasty and The Commonwealth of The Two Nations. Queen Jadwiga's grandfather, King Casimir III, The Great (Polish: Kazimierz Wielki) (1333-1370), the last king of Polish Piast dynasty, invited Jews to Poland after destructions of over 300 German Jewish communities, and with the Statut of Wislica (1384) he provided Jews protection >from pogroms and ritual murders at the hands of the Christians. King Casimir had been romantically involved with young and beautiful Jewish maiden. Her name was Esther (Esterka). Invitation of Ashkenazim Jews and extended to them monarch protection can be directly related to Esther activities. Thus, we have to be thankfull to two royal Esthers, but not to the St. Jadwiga, not related to Yocheved. Re: Siemiatycze in Robert Strumwasser's post 4, NOV 2000.
. . . I recently received >from NARA a copy of a cousin's letter toPlease note: The Germans initially occupied Siemiatycze on 10 September 1939. This was ten days after the invasion of Poland. Rosh Hashana, that year, fell on 14 September. They stayed for twelve days, until they ceded control to the Soviets on Succoth 15 Tishri/Thursday, 28 September. In June, 1940 Germany violated the alliance treaty with USSR. They bombarded Siemiatycze and retook the entire area. By 1942, Siemiatycze Jews along with others >from the district were in the deportation ghetto established near the cemetery ("intambrik" hinter dem brik/across the bridge) on the east bank of the Kamianka River that runs through the town. It took only two days with trains running 24 hours daily to transport virtually all of the ghetto Jews to Treblinka. There were two camps there - an extermination center and a smaller labor camp with fewer than a thousand guarded by Germans and Ukrainians. No one escaped >from the death camp. A few Jews escaped >from the labor camp (among them Sol Kuperhand who, with his wife Miriam, has written of their wartime experience). A dozen or more are known to have jumped off the inbound trains. Most of these escapees survived in the forests with others who had avoided being sent to the ghetto. Over the years, I've met some of the fewer than four dozen who survived the war. They endured with the aid of righteous gentiles and their own wits. They had to fight off hostile Poles as well as the Polish Home (underground) Army who were not friends to the Jews in that area. Miriam STRONGWATER [dob 1886] enquired about the following people:Of those killed by the Germans at Treblinka, the Semyatitsher Yizkorbuch lists only Feygeh Gayber. David Cohen davidpcohen@att.net
