Re: "The mass grave in Simferopol"

In his message of 11-10-00 Herut Schlomoff asked for information about
what happened during WWII to Simferopol's "14,000 Jews," among whom numbered his great grandmother and her daughters. A book which discusses the shoah at Simferopol is Raul Hilberg's "The Destruction of European Jews" Holmes & Meier Publishers, 1985. (I don't have this book at hand so I can't tell the ISBN number without prowling for it on the internet.) If Mr.Schlomoff can read French, he might want to go to: http://www.phdn.org/negation/rassinier/hilbergsimferopol.html where there is a critical discussion of the revionist Rassinier who, of course, disputes Hilberg's figures and account of the slaughter of Simferopol's Jews. For the murders in Simferopol on December 13,14, and 15,1941, Martin Gilbert gives the number as 14,300, on page in his book " The Holocaust" Henry Holt and Company, Inc., 1985, ISBN 0-8050-0348-7. His footnote for von Manstein's directive for the "actions" refers to the Nuremberg Military Tribunal documents. Another website Mr. Schlomoff may want to visit is: http://www.pgonline.com/electriczen/trials/simferopol.html where he can read the views and report of the Military Tribunal II, in Nuremburg, concerning the actions of the Einsatzgruppen at Simferopol. At: http://motlc.wiesenthal.com/text/x30/xm3026.html Mr. Schlomoff can read a brief account offered by the Wiesenthal Center about the destruction of Simferopol's Jews which offered by the Wiesenthal Center. While still online, I found an address for today's Simferopol's Jewish Community to which Mr. Schlomoff may want to write: Chief Rabbi , Yitschok Lipshitz 24 Mironovo St. Simferopol 333001, Ukraine Email: simferopol@fjc.ru Finally, even though there are no Family History Centers in Israel, Mr. Schlomoff should know that, according to Jewishgenner Steven Weiss's Ukraine group message of 9-20-00, there exist 34 microfilms of Jewish Vital Records for Simferopol. Details about these microfilms can be found at: http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp and Mr. Weiss advises to use this description to learn details about the films: "Topic: Ukraine, Krym, Simferopol (Simferopol) - Jewish records Titles: Vital records, 1853-1917 Jewish Congregation of Simferopol (Tavrida province)" Naomi Fatouros (nee FELDMAN) Bloomington, Indiana NFatouros@aol.com Researching: BELKOWSKY, Odessa, Berdichev; FELDMAN, Pinsk; SHUTZ, SCHUTZ, Shcherets; LEVY, Mulhouse;SAS, Podwolochisk; RAPOPORT, Tarnopol.

Hard-to-Read Town Name
#ukraine
flash@...
I have had trouble identifying the town written down as my g-g-grandmother's
last residence on her 1898 passenger manifest. It looks something like "Chaszazarati." The town is most likely in Volhynia or near Odessa. The last few letters of the word are particularly hard for me to read. I've used the ShtetlSeeker and "Where Once We Walked," but I am still not sure what town this is. I've scanned the word as written on the manifest and placed it on the JewishGen ViewMate, where it has been labelled as file VM038. The URL is: http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/toview14.html#vm038 (I have been having a *great* deal of trouble posting this message, causing a delay of several days since I uploaded the scan on November 7. ViewMate removes scans after seven days, so there are only a few days left before mine is removed). I'd really appreciate any help that anyone can provide! Thanks. Research in Poland and Ukraine
#general
Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>
I have now hired four different researchers in Poland and
Ukraine. I have had mixed results--most very good, and one very bad. But I have learned one thing: In my particular cases, the most reputable researchers stated a fee (often as a per-hour rate; plus expenses) and collected all or most of the fee after the research was complete--rather than stating a single large fee and collecting it up front, before any research has begun. Please note that there are many researchers around the world. My remarks refer only to my specific experiences. I am not attempting to make generalizations, state an unbending rule, or recommend proper behavior for researchers to follow.
