Re: OUDTSHOORN - MORE INFORMATION
#southafrica
Louise & Alfred Goldschmidt <aviva@...>
Dear Robyn and S.A.Sig,
Do yo have any information about the Ostrich feather business in Somerset East where my grandfather Louis Cohen lost a fortune when the price went down. Do you also know where there are descriptions of life in that town at its beginning in the late 19th century when he moved there after marrying in Port Elizabeth in 1880. Louise Goldschmidt

I don't know if this is real or an internet scam, but it seems very
worthwhile to pass on to my mailing list. Stranger coincidences have happened than these two finding each other. Please pass it on. -DS My name is Rachel Herczl (nee Rosenberg) and I am asking for help to find a woman called Taubie >from Muncacz. I was born in 1929 and arrived at Birkenau in May 1944. I was in a lager. A woman by the name of Aliska was in charge of my block. I was among 20 girls chosen to go >from Birkenau to Auschwitz every day. We worked in the fields and in the gardens of the S.S. officers. Taubi and I were together. She had had a younger sister who was about may age. After they were separated, she "adopted" me. She was about 2 years older than me and was extremely good to me. We were both moved to Auschwitz and worked in the sewing and mending section. We walked together in the "March of the Dead" and stayed together till we were liberated in Ravensbruk and in Neustadt- Gelbe in May of 1945. I would very much like to meet her again. Hear about her life since we parted and thank her for her kindness. If anyone has any information which could help me or know where to turn to get the right information, I would be extremely grateful Yours sincerely, Rachel. please send any information to either NaomiWulfsohn@hotmail.com or the email below. Deportation lists update
#hungary
Louis Schonfeld <Lmagyar@...>
As I may have mentioned in a previous message, we have a team leader, Mark
Benisz, for the Szombathely deportation list. I will be mailing him the material next week, and he will determine how many volunteers he will need to complete the task. He will be contacting those of you who have thankfully volunteered. At this time we still need a team leader for the Debrecen list, and an additional two-three volunteers to input the data. I would to thank all of you who have volunteered, and I anxiously wait to hear >from the few additional volunteers still needed. Louis Schonfeld H-sig facilitator

Mussida surname: jewish roots???
#general
Al G. M. <almucida@...>
Hello to all,
My name is Alvaro and I'm brazilian. Since I´m very interested in genealogy, I have done some research about my roots. My greatfather was Italian and his surname was MUSSIDA. I ended up getting to know some Italian relatives and one of them is also interested in genealogy. He was able to build our complete genealogical tree >from the 1600´s and the first record of our family in Italy is >from the 1400´s. He told me that there´s a hipotesis that the origin of the Mussida was the arrival in Italy of a person who was >from Navarra, so possibly this person would have a surname which would be Mussida or something like this (in my case, Italian Mussida turned into Brazilian Mucida so another surname could have turned Mussida in Italy). Since I have researched for a long time my roots in Italy, I simply dont know where to start seeking Spanish / Sephardic surnames. I actually dont have any concrete evidence that it might have a sephardic origin, but I decided to try because of the meaningful presence of Jews in Spain in that century. So I would appreciate very much if : 1) Anyone could give me historical facts that support/deny the idea of Jews >from Spain going to Italy in the XIV/XV centuries. What about Navarra, is there any particular evidence there? Were there many Jews there? 2) Anyone know any sephardic surname that might sound similar to Mussida? Does it sound to have a Jewish root? I would appreciate any other tip/idea to help my research. Best regards, Alvaro Guimarães Mucida

ROTHENBERG FAMILY
#general
Mike Fischer <miketran@...>
I am looking for any relations of Abe and Sophie ROTHENBERG. Sophie was my
grandmother's sister. Her maiden name was STEINBERG. Sophie had 3 sisters, Becky, Rose and Dora. This is the only information I have. Dora's daughter, who is still alive, won't even talk to me about the family. I think there are some secrets that she thinks I won't find out. I have lots of time and patience. The STEINBERG family came >from Meseritz, Poland. Wilma Fischer Passaic, N.J.

Family disinterest
#general
Lancy
I get reactions like: "What are you going to do with what you find?" or
"It's enough if you update me just once in a while". Actually, there was an item in ancestry.com a couple of weeks ago about this phenomenon. The lady who wrote it commented that she learned to share her thoughts and emotions with her pet. It seems that the interest and the excitement is all ours and we have our fellow JewishGenners to share it with. Personally, I've decided not to let their disinterest discourage me. I really enjoy it and that's fine with me. Lancy Spalter Kfar Tavor, Israel
