Iasi Headstone Photo Update #general

Shel Bercovich <sbercovich@...>

Hi all,

Have received another photo of a headstone >from the Iasi Jewish
Cemetary. This one is for a BERCOVICI, Fisel, b. abt. 1882, d. 1964.
from the photo, it looks like the plaque is considerably newer than
the stone, so someone must have attended this stone more recently than
the unveiling date.

Fisel BERCOVICI does not seem to fit either into my own tree or that
of the researcher who "claimed" the earlier photo I posted about in August.

If anyone would like further information on this stone, please e-mail
me. Please Note: I do not have any other photos of any other stones in
the Iasi J. Cemetary, except some general photos of the mass graves of
those killed in the Holocaust. The 2 or 3 photos about which I've
posted were taken on a "one-time-only" "as luck would have it" basis!

enhancing readability of digital scans #general

Tom Venetianer <tom.vene@...>

Dear Julian and all

Usually the best way to improve the readability of a *grayscale*
digital scan is to use the contrast-brightness controls. First
augment the contrast as much as visually seems adequate, then augment
the brightness to eliminate black little dots of "digital dirt".
Eventually, if after this procedure the lines are too broken/ripple
(contrasting tends to cause this), try a bit of overall bluring. This
works fine in most cases.

regards
Tom

I have a very early Polish document dated 1822 which needs translation.
Unfortunately, the original document is extremely feint and very difficult
to read, even after trying several methods at digital enhancement.

1) Can anyone advise me what is the best way to digitally enhance a very
feint document. Most image editing programs contain lots of options such
as sharpen,de-speckle,find edge,balance etc.What option or combination
of options would be the best choice for a black and white image?

Copyright Laws #general

suprlmn@...

Dear Friends,
Not being an attorney, I need some advice on how copyright laws work.
Recently I posted a comment about a cousin who instructed everyone to
refuse to share genealogical information with me. The reply >from someone I
found on JGFF, and with whom I offered to share information, was positively
vitriolic. Now I learn that he has taken this vendetta [over the spelling of
several names!!!] one step further and has copyrighted his research. The
problem is, that much of his research is based on information that I
personally supplied to him, including branches >from my great-grandparents
down to my own grandchildren. Does this law now say that he "owns" this
information, so that if I should choose to print a family tree for my
children, I would be violating a law? Surely that is not the intent of
copyright laws, to turn genealogists -- amateur or professional -- into
criminals. I'd appreciate hearing >from some of you mavens on the
ramifications for all of us in such an instance.

Conference Accomm #general

Miriam Margolyes <75342.3217@...>

Possibly I am out of line in posting this but here's a list which might
help those worried about costs at next year's Conference.

May I once again reiterate that the Confererence costs are absolutely
normal for London & are indeed considerably cheaper than
many hotels less luxurious than the Inter-C.

Please email me if you'd like me to mail you a list of moderately-prices B & Bs.

Please note: B & B in the UK does not mean the standard
of luxury offered in American B & Bs.

They are much simpler, often private homes-but if you're lucky,
can be a delightul way to spend time & not money.

Once again the Douglas E. Goldman Jewish Genealogy Center (DOROT) has
provided the Warsaw Shtetl CO-OP with extract pages >from the LDS
Microfilms. The recent shipment contains Birth, Marriage and Death Records
from 1836, 1840-43 and 1851. Miriam Segali, the volunteer at Dorot, has
translated the records and hand written the information on to large ledger
sheets. Volunteers are needed to enter Miriam's hand written information
onto Excel Spreadsheets. You don't have to know any Polish to do this
work.
If you would like to volunteer please contact me.
