Karolyfalva in Zemplen county was a German and Hungarian language speaking mountain village close to Ujhely. E. Fenyes does not tell how many Jews lived there in the 1830s. Peter ===== Dr. Peter I. The Fenyes book, two volumes, entitled MAGYARORSZAG
GEOGRAPHIAI SZOTARA, was published in 1851 and was republished in 1984. Allami Konyvterjeszto Vallalat published it and printed it in Szeged. Translation Requested on Viewmate

Jerry Zeisler <Jerry.Zeisler@...>
Dear H-Sig'ers,
I recently posted some Yiddish text that was part of a picture postcard sent by my great-uncle to my grandmother. I would appreciate it if someone would take the trouble to translate it for me. Although Sheldon Clare was kind enough to provide a translation, I would appreciate a second opinion. It is located at: (http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ <http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/> ) and it is document # VM047 Thank you! Jerry Zeisler

Mad used to be a Jewish village in the 1830s. There
were 800 Jews living there along with 3800 Gentiles. The village was on the HEGYALJA area, famous for its wine. And giving the girl the name of Ida?>> If "Chicki" is pronounced "khay-ki" then it is a transliteration of the diminuative of "Khaya" (or "Haya" as you have written), and we have already established the connection between Khaya and Ida. I personally never use "ch" to denote any other sound than the "ch" in the word "church" or "chicken". I also never denote the gutteral sound of "Khaya" with an "h" since that can be confused for an "h" as in "hello". Keeps things clearer when dealing with East European names transliterated into English. Bob Weiss RWeissJGS@aol.com
