Re: Children Use Mother's Maiden Name #general

Is it possible that this might explain why my grandfather used his wife's
maiden name when he came to America? I have not found the arrival records
of either him in about 1889 or his wife & children who came later in 1892
so do not know what name they traveled under.

Registering for US Social Security #general

Roy Smith <roysmith@...>

I have a copy of the "U.S. Social Security Act - Application for Account
Number" for Abraham Pellish, which is dated December 1, 1936. At
that time, my cousin was 43 years old.

Could someone tell me what are (or were) the requirements for US residents
to apply for a Social Security number? Is it likely that Abraham was
recently arrived in the US when he applied, or was it necessary for him to
live in the country for a defined period before he could apply?

Many thanks

Photographer's stamp #general

Roy Smith <roysmith@...>

I have an old photograph portrait of a young man with a Yiddish
inscription on the back which identifies the subject as Avram Wolfeler.

The photographer's stamp is very faint and is in Cyrillic script. A friend
has copied it for me and tells me the first two lines probably read:-

"Photographer"
"Boris Krias?avsk" (one letter illegible)

The next line is probably the location and possibly translates as:-

"Verkhnietsn vprovom" (or "vprobom")

Can anyone shed any light on this information

Many thanks

Roy Smith

Re: Belarus Surname Index #belarus

Julian Peerutin <JulianP@...>

Hi,

Thanks to this index I have found the first record that recognizes my
surname (which is quite unique). However the area that this person comes
from is not a recognized name that I understand my family came from.
I tried looking trough the Shtetlseeker but came up with lots of names that
I couldn't really claim to be the one.
Can any help me and tell me where this place is and what it is called today.
Gubernia: Vitebsk
District: Rezhitsa
Town: Rezhitsa

Thanks

Yes, David. Wolkowysk (a.k.a. Volkovysk) is a town in the former Grodno
Gubernia. It's in Belarus today, but not far >from the Polish border. It's
big enough to appear on many maps...not far >from Grodno on the Belarus side
and Bialystok on the Poland side.

Can anyone tell me what the "Wolkowysker" Cemetery Association is or was?

Does this refer to a particular shtetl? If so where?

There was a place called Warriben. It was an "ehemaliges Rittergut" or
formerly a knight's estate. There was also a Neu Warriben which was right
near Warriben. These formed the community of Asuppen.. In Latvian it is
called Varieba in the Aizupes municipality.
