Re: The name Ida

Myra S. Davis <myrabokpg@...>
Hello everyone,
I read about the name of Ida >from Ida Selavan Schwarcz who said her Hebrew name was Haya. I sent a copy of her message to my cousin whose mother, my aunt, was named Ida and then changed it to Idell. He wrote me back that it was interesting however his mother's name was Chicki. He was not sure if that was spelled correctly however that is how it sounded. Has anyone ever heard of a Hebrew name sounding like Chicki? And giving the girl the name of Ida? Thanks to all. Myra Myra Davis, Tucson, AZ myrabokpg@juno.com

The name Batya/Bithiah
#general
Judith Romney Wegner
Dear JGenners,
In my comment on the name Batya, I stated that the name Bithia for the daughter of the Pharaoh of the Exodus does not appear "in the Bible" -- though it does appear later in the rabbinic oral tradition. In context, of course, I meant that it does not appear in the Bible's version of the Exodus. However, Leslie Reich has kindly pointed out to me that a character identified as "Bithiah daughter of Pharaoh, whom Mered married" appears in I Chronicles 4:18 (She appears in a genealogy unrelated to the Exodus story; and in any case the daughter of the Pharaoh of the Exodus, according to rabbinic tradition, became the wife not of Mered but of Caleb.) The Bithiah of Chronicles, then, was the daughter of a different Pharaoh -- "Pharaoh" being a title and not a proper name. (Solomon, likewise, is said in I kings 3:1 to have married "the daughter of Pharaoh" -- again, this was clearly not the Pharaoh of the Exodus story!) But even though the Bithiah in Chronicles is not identifiable with the Pharaoh's daughter who raised Moses , the fact that she bore this name may well be the reason why rabbinic tradition (in Lev. Rabbah and elsewhere) assigns the same name to the one who adopted Moses. Judith Romney Wegner

Re: Given name of Label/Labe

JReing2528@...
I believe the name Label/Labe is a variant of the Yiddish name Lieb,
diminutive "el", meaning "heart" or "love". My grandfather, named Lieb MARIPOLSKY (>from Zwenigrad) became Louis at Ellis Island in 1910. My 11 year old grandson has as his "Jewish Name" >from his Bris Milla, the name, doubled, in memory of his mother's grandfather, >from L'vov,"Label Label" with English name of Lowell, so you see the name is still quite current. My aunt told the story of how her husband, my Uncle Lou, started school not knowing that his name was Louis. The teacher called out the name and he didn't answer; he had always been called Labl at home. Also, someone in a class I attended a year or two ago was named Label (a Yiddish class, so we all gave our Jewish names). I don't think the name was uncommon. Am not sure if it's related to Leib or not. Lynne Shapiro Western Mass. On Wed, 8 Nov 2000 13:51:56 -0500 "Mitzi Smetters" <msmetters@ncweb.com> writes:
