that the new AOL software (6.0) automatically does MIME encoding, which
Lyris software doesn't like. Stanley upgraded to 6.0 hence the problem. The
problem is currently being addressed, I would advise not upgrading just yet.

We recently learned that the Lodz Branch of the Polish State Archives
has made mistakes in processing orders >from researchers using the
JRI-Poland on-line database as the source of information.

In error, they have been sending the photocopies to the Polish Consulate
in New York City. The consulate has then sent form letters asking for an
additional fee.

The two known cases were brought to the attention of the Polish State
Archives and the consulate on Monday. A reply was received today
(by fax) >from the Executive Director of the Polish State Archives
acknowledging the error and assuring us that this would be cleared
up without delay.

In the meantime, should you receive a request for payment from
the Polish Consulate in New York for "copies of vital statistics
documents" relating to an order placed with the Polish State Archives,
kindly refer them to the letter of 6 November 2000 >from Jewish
Records Indexing - Poland (to the Polish State Archives) and
request that they forward the documents without charge. You
may also include a copy of this message with your letter to
the Polish Consulate.

Note, this does NOT apply to any 20th century records that may
have been requested >from Civil Records Offices (Urzad Stanu
Cywilnego) in Poland.

I am searching for HESS in Silesia and Berlin, especially for Emil HESS,
surgical instrument maker. I guess he came >from Berlin to Breslau about
1890-1895 and possibly returned to Berlin in 1911/1912. In Berlin there
seems to be a long line of jewish HESS, what can be seen >from the
adressbooks (I have copied all HESS entries.

In my case, I have individual data (first names,DOB, birth locations and
other items (fields) of information) for nearly two thousand individuals

from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire and the U.S. with the name

Schonfeld (including variant spellings). Each individual would constitute
one record within the database (imagine one index card among many in a
file box). If someone has developed such a database (preferably in
Microsoft Access format)I would like to hear >from you. I am not looking
for a genealogy program (I already use FTMaker v 8.0). I understand that
many genealogy programs accept names of non-related individuals, however,
this feature is not sufficiently flexible for many people's needs(at
least, not for me).

I view the database concept more as a research tool that will help me
identify, sort and analyze all the names I have accumulated. Your help
would be appreciated. Respond privately.
