This morning while waiting for my ride, I heard part of a story on a repeat
of "Unsolved Mysteries" on TV. Apparantly a gentleman named John Grady bought a box of antiques among which was a century old bible with great family detail belonging to Charles LAZARUS born in London England and his then bride Fannie BERGMAN They had at least on son whose name I heard, Joshua LAZARUS who married Dora FLEISHMAN I believe that the two other names I heard, Reina and Blooma were daughters of Charles. The man is looking for the rightful owners of this valuable piece of a family's history. and I thought this might be a great forum >from which to start. They ask that the show be contacted, I am sorry but I only got Burbank California, I know that the re-runs seem to be syncdicated in all markets. Just thought somone out there might be interested. looking for documents

Lili Susser <susserl@...>
Hi JGenners
I am only dabbing in genealogy but was pretty successful so far in obtaining my family's documents of as far as 5 generations back. I encountered a snag looking for documents of my grandfather, and never got an answer >from the Office of Statistics in Poland. I know the area of his birth, approx. dates of birth and death but no names of parents. Can anyone direct me to a place or person who may be able to help and what I can expect to pay for such info? Perhaps someone traveling to a cemetery in Plock Poland may be able to look up this information. Thank you Lili Susser Pueblo, Colorado Susserl@mindspring.com

Gitel

Rlberliner@...
There have recently been several postings about name origins. One on 11/20
mentioned Daniel as being Gedalia in Hebrew. Is it possible that Gitel is the feminine version of Gedalia? If not, what is the original of Gitel? My question relates to who a cousin might have been named after. This may help locate ancestors. Thank you for your response. Kapochunas, Andrew <KapochunasA@...>
Relevant information >from the "Encyclopedia Lituanica" re Kovno in the 1890s:
A horse-drawn street car began running between the City Hall and the railroad station (3.5 km) in 1892. The town was first supplied with electricity in 1899. Out of a population of 53,000 in 1888, 33,400 were Jewish, 9,400 Catholic (ethnically Lithuanian or Polish), 6,800 Orthodox (Russian), 2,700 Protestant (mostly of German origin) and several hundred others. In 1897 there were 71,000 people living in Kaunas. Besides the three Catholic churches which had been transformed into Russian Orthodox churches earlier, a Russian Orthodox sobor (cathedral) was erected in 1895. This large Byzantine structure, situated at the head of the city's major avenue, became a landmark unmistakably exemplifying the Russian imprint on Kaunas. The three high schools were all Russian. The municipal theater, concert hall, city museum and public library, built during the 1890's, were purely Russian cultural institutions." Andrew Kapochunas

New information on Ohio pages of web site
#usa
Rachel Unkefer <runkefer@...>
We now have a listing of the Jewish burials in Plymouth cemetery in
Richland County, Ohio compiled by Janet Akaha. Please take a look if you think you might have had family anywhere in that area. Keep in mind that there were not Jewish cemeteries in every community, so people were often transported out of their communities to the nearest Jewish cemetery. http://www.jewishgen.org/earlyamerican/states/OH/plymouthcem.html Also, I have pages on the web site for registering your name and the names you are researching for Ohio, Kentucky, and Michigan. If you want to be added to those lists, please email me with your information. See the current register of researchers for an example of what information to send. This is not intended to be a substitute for the JGFF, it's just that we can get a lot more specific this way. I will add pages for other states as I get time to do it. Sherribob <sherribob@...>
Barry,
Also, keep in mind that many of these shtetls had Yiddish names which were often quite different >from the "official" name of the town. For instance, my gf's Galician shtetl Ustrzyki Dolne was consistently called Istryker by the Jewish residents. Take a look at the book "Where Once We Walked". Many, but not all, of the Yiddish town name variants are listed in that book. If it is listed it will refer you back to the office town name. good luck in your search, Sherri Bobish Searching: WALTZMAN, Ustrzyki Dolne (Istryker), Galicia RATOWSKY, Ariogala, Lith. LEFFENFELD, Daliowa, Galica BOJDA, Tarnobrzeg, Galicia SAKOLSKY, Grodek, Bialystok
