Soc Sec applications-Numidents-what can we do? #general

Denise Azbill <famaz@...>

Dear Genners,

I read the recent post by someone who received a Numident instead of a copy
of the original social security application, and that the SSA is going to
be implementing this permanently. Does anyone have information about when
this will take place? This is upsetting news!

Dear Eli,
I have been following your messages with interest but couln't really add
much about your queries. My mother's family, the Morris family, were in
Oudtshoorn. Mark Morris was my great grandfather. He was involved in the
Queen Street Shule and also the establishment of the Jewish Day School which
was the first Jewish Day School in SA, I think, and moreover a government
school! He owned a few hotels in the area, including the Criterion, and was
considered one of the Ostrich Barons. This hotel still exists and is now
called "The Baron"!
Apparently there are copies of the Oudtshoorn Koerant in the Cape Town
Library which describe life etc. I, unfortunately don't have access to this
but would dearly love to read them.
If you're interested in more info I'll happily forward it.
Look forward to seeing what else comes up

Regards

Robyn

The address is:
Soviet Union
Vsevolozhskaya
Leningradshaya oblast'
Konstantinouskaya str.
Meczenokov M.A. (This is the family's name)
-------------------------------------------
I can't vouch for whether the street name might have
changed since the 70's, but the street name should
read "Konstantinovskaya," not "Konstantinouskaya."
You are, however, missing the actual address number
(building, and maybe also which apartment block
within the building complex and/or apartment number,
since single-family homes are pretty rare!) on
Konstantinovskaya Street.

You might try your luck with one of the Internet
directory assistance services, although you're less
likely to strike paydirt outside the major cities.
Also keep in mind that it used to take soooo long to
get new phone service (frequently years) in Soviet
times that many families never bothered to change the
name on the phone company records if they moved,
because that would mean starting >from scratch.
Good luck!

Re: Moliff, Russia - where is it? #general

Try looking up "Mogilev" or "Mohilev" (same place, the spelling
depending upon who wrote the gazeteer).

On Thu, 23 Nov 2000 02:19:34, asparagirl@dca.net (Asparagirl) opined:

Rebecca (Rifka) NEEDLEMAN KROKOFF,was born July 7, 1900 in Moliff, Russia
to Morris NEEDLEMAN and Nessa HERSHKOWITZ / HERSHOWITZ.

Where is Moliff, Russia? Attempts to use JewishGen's ShtetlSeeker have
yielded a number of similiar-sounding place names (including the
lovely-sounding city of "Mylove" ), but none that seem to match. Keep
in mind, too, that "Russia" in 1900 (at the time of her birth) isn't the
same as Russia today.

Rebecca/Rifka's husband Murray KROKOFF's family was >from the Podalia
Gubernia, near Kiev,in the Ukraine, so maybe the town was near there, but
I don't know if she married him before or after they were in NYC, so
perhaps it wasn't.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Go to your nearest public library, and ask the lady how to search The
New York Times (which is the newspaper of record for much of what
happens in the United States, and certainly for New York). If there
was a campaign for the man's election, he was likely discussed in the
papers.

Jews in the Liquor Industry #general

IsraelP <zach4v6@...>

There was a recent discussion in this group about
the role of Jews in the liquor industry in the old
country. Beer and alcohol were indeed very much
Jewish-dominated business in much of Russia.
There is a slim volume called "Heshetiyya KaDat" by Yehudah Leib
Lipkind, published in 1898, discussing many aspects of alcoholic
beverages, including the new laws and licensing regulations issued
by Czarist Russia. The book is in Hebrew and I have seen it at the
National Library in Jerusalem. (The book can be used only in the
library and must be ordered >from the closed stacks.)

Grodno 1912 Voters' List #general

Eileen Price <eileen.price@...>

About a week ago there was a message regarding the Grodno 1912 Voters' List.
I checked this out through the Belarus SIG, Grodno, 1912 Voters' List. I
found several names that could be family members. At the end of each line
giving the person's name and other information, there is an ID number. I
would like to access that number and find the person who supplied the
information. I could not find a link >from the ID number to original source.
I checked with the Belarus SIG and have not heard >from anyone regarding the
