Has Anyone Worked With This Drohobycz Holocaust Book? #galicia

Carole Feinberg <feincgs@...>

Dear Friends,

Have any Galicia researchers used Samuel Rothenberg's 1984 book, "List o
zagladzie Zydow w Drohobyczu", which translates to, "List of the Jews
(who were) victims of the Holocaust in Drohobycz"?

So far, this book has been located in the British Library (in London?)
and in the Toronto University library.

Thanks in advance for anticipated help.

Re: Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn or Long Island???? #general

Cypress Hills Cemetary is on the Brooklyn/Queens border, both part of NYC.
However, tis area had been referred to as Long Island since,
geographically, Brooklyn and Queens are on Long Island.
Today, Nassau and Suffolk counties are what people are referring to when
they say "Long Island".
Good luck - let me know if you need more information

there is another Cypress Hills Cemetery out on Long Island? If not, how
can I pursue with the one in Brooklyn if they may not be thoroughly
searching their records?

What or where is Thed. #general

bevphil <bevphil@...>

On a Hungarian birth certificate, under the father's name,
Nyiregyhaza is written.
Under the mother's name, the word Thed is written.
Under the name of the witness, (surname same as mother's maiden
name) I also find the word Thed.

Is Thed a location or does it have another significance. I have
tried to look up Thed, but have had no success at all.

VM100 - Russian Army Discharge Papers #general

Mark_J._Schwartz@...

I have posted to viewmate what have been described to me as the discharge
papers of my greatgrandfather, Lazer (Max) Fruman. I know that the xerox
has portions of tape obscuring portions of the document, but any
information or details you could provide would be appreciated. In keeping
with an excellent "tradition" I plan on donating to Jewishgen for this
excellent addition of Viewmate. Thanks.

Re: Grodno 1912 Voters' List #general

Edward Rosenbaum <erosenbaum@...>

Eileen,

The ID number only allows for locating the original entry in the voters
list. However, the original entry does not have much additional
information. Quoting >from the INFO file for the Grodno 1912 Voters' List...

"This database contains six fields:

Surname - The voter's surname
Voter - The voter's given name(s)
Father - The voter's patronymic, i.e. his father's given name(s)
District - The district where the voter lived. One of the nine uezds of
Grodno Gubernia: Bialystok, Bielsk, Brest, Grodno, Kobrin, Pruzhany, Slonim,
Sokolka or Volkovysk
Town - The town where the voter lived. Only listed in a few of the lists
Reference number - Used to locate the original entry

The voter lists are not an index to a larger set of data. What you see here
is all that there is in the original lists. The only additional data for
each voter is the indication of how he qualified to vote. That information
was not transferred to the transliterated database because of its lack of
usefulness. "

About a week agothere was a message regarding theGrodno 1912 Voters'List.
I checked this out through the Belarus SIG, Grodno, 1912 Voters' List. I
found several names that could be family members. At the end of each line
giving the person's name and other information, there is an ID number. I
would like to access that number and find the person who supplied the
information. I could not find a link >from theID numberto original source.
I checked with the Belarus SIGand havenot heard >from anyone regardingthe
ID number. Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Soc Sec applications-Numidents-what can we do? #general

Denise Azbill <famaz@...>

Dear Genners,

I read the recent post by someone who received a Numident instead of a copy
of the original social security application, and that the SSA is going to
be implementing this permanently. Does anyone have information about when
this will take place? This is upsetting news!

Re: OUDTSHOORN - MORE INFORMATION #southafrica

Robyn Lichter <robyn_lichter@...>

Dear Eli,
I have been following your messages with interest but couln't really add
much about your queries. My mother's family, the Morris family, were in
Oudtshoorn. Mark Morris was my great grandfather. He was involved in the
Queen Street Shule and also the establishment of the Jewish Day School which
was the first Jewish Day School in SA, I think, and moreover a government
school! He owned a few hotels in the area, including the Criterion, and was
considered one of the Ostrich Barons. This hotel still exists and is now
called "The Baron"!
Apparently there are copies of the Oudtshoorn Koerant in the Cape Town
Library which describe life etc. I, unfortunately don't have access to this
but would dearly love to read them.
If you're interested in more info I'll happily forward it.
Look forward to seeing what else comes up

Regards

Robyn
