Myaskofka, Russia #general

David & Diana Goldenberg <danddgoldenberg@...>

Dear Genners-
I am seeking help in locating Myaskofka, Russia. I managed to obtain
the Petition for Naturalization belonging to my grandfather, Abraham
David Goldenberg. He arrived in NY 10/13/03, on the Vaderland. He
listed Myaskofka as his place of birth.
Any help would be appreciated.

Regarding Jewish Communal Register #general

marshall shapiro <mkshapiro@...>

I recently posted a message about the jewish communal
register and made an error. My grandfather, the barber,
is Jacob Epstein, not Shapiro.
My grandfather the butcher was Julius Shapiro.
Sorry for the confusion.

Social Security Death Index #general

Roberta Berman <danber@...>

I sent away for 4 SS-5's in July. Within a month, I received 3 of
them. The last one has not arrived as yet and I think my request must
have gotten lost somewhere. I mailed the 4 requests in 4 separate
envelopes with 4 separate letters and 4 separate checks to: SSA, Office
of Central Records Operations, Attention: FOIA Workgroup, PO Box 17772,
300 N. Greene St., Baltimore, MD 21290.

I am having difficulty locating a telephone number so I can find out
where the missing SS-5 is. I called the 800 information number, but
they were unable to find a phone number for that office.

Does anyone have the phone number?

TIA,
Roberta Wagner Berman

The name Bashe or Basha #general

Would anyone know whether the name Basha or Bashe was generally a man's
name? The individual bearing this name came >from Belarus in the early
1900's.
Thanks

KAIN family (Galati, Romania) #general

Dan & Lee <danlee@...>

I am searching for my mothers "biological" birth family (last name Kain or
Kane). She was born in Galati, Romania in 1934 - and was the youngest of
about 9 or 10 siblings. She was adopted soon after birth. She was known as
Mutzi Cohn in Galati. Later, she moved to Israel - where she became
"Lichtenberg" (later Lior). I need help finding her family. Does anyone
know if there would be a record of her birth/adoption somewhere? She has
nothing - no papers and no one to help her (her mother recently died and
she has no other family).

Thanks

Lee Lior

VEIDEN from Tarnow #general

Judith Romney Wegner

Dear JGenners

Is anybody researching the name WEIDEN (or WAJDEN) >from the town of
Tarnow in Poland?

I am specifically interested in Lev (Lew?) WEIDEN (WAJDEN?), born in
Tarnov in 1903, and in his father ISAK (any spelling) WEIDEN or WAJDEN,
possibly born in Tarnow around 1870-1880.

Please reply privately.

Re: INS notations on Ships Passenger List #general

Doug Cohen <DMCohen@...>

This is undoubtedly a lookup performed on August 7, 1940 (8-7-40) when the
INS was asked to document to a court that the individual had immigrated on
a certain date and ship, and the INS looked up the manifest entry, and
issued Immigration Certificate No. 2-769948.

The individual appears to have applied for citizenship, and you can get a
copy of his/her citizenship papers >from NARA if you write to them as
described in the JewishGen FAQ.

The notations entered on the ships passenger pages under the occupation
column are related to obtaining naturalization papers. What do the
numbers mean ?
for example 2-769948-8-7-40
and 2-915214
If someone has a good key to search for the past discussion that would be
helpful.

Lev (Leon) Davidovich BRONSTEIN used the nom de guerre TROTSKY, rather at
random since that was the name of a guard in a prison he was in. The name
stuck. For more info on his parents >from an unbiased source, see "Three
Who Made a Revolution" by Bertram Wolfe, also the recent Kolganov bio
(released old Soviet files)- forgot name, check bibliofind.com under
