Questions about given names #galicia

Bill & Renee Stevens <brstevens@...>

My paternal grandmother was Rachel WOLF bat Dorf WOLF. I believe Rachel was
born in or near Lemberg, then Austro-Hungary, around 1865-1870. I have
never run across the name Dorf before and am wondering whether it may be a
shortened version of some other name. Any thoughts?

My mother's Yiddish name was Liby (Leibe??). My father called her Liby or
Lola. Her papers have her listed as Leona(Leonia). Does anyone know
whether there is a Hebrew equivalent to Liby/Leibe or whether that was a
common Yiddish/Hebrew name at the turn of the century?

Photograph translation #galicia

KilgoreJ@...

Hi all. I just found several photographs at my grandfather's house which say
the following onthe back: Fot "Moderne". CH ZANDMAN, w GABINIE.

I think it means Moderne Photographs, with CH ZANDMAN, being the
photographer. I am 98% certain the photos were taken in Poland, however, I
am not sure where. Does anyone out there recognize this studio, or Gabinie
as a town?

Second, I found a postcard with the following on the back "N.MAZELMAN, Warsz.
Nalewki 40. Again, I figure N. MAZELMAN is the photographer, with the studio
being in Warsaw. Would the Nalewki 40 be a street address?

I also can't date these photos, although I know they were taken prior to WWII.

Thanks in advance for your help!

All the best,

Dear Carole and listers

Thank you for letting everyone know about the up-dated Hamburg lists.

I was delighted to find a GLATT >from Drohobycz, the first possible member of
my grandfather's family, that I've been lucky enough to find, in the whole
of Galicia!

The exact record was:

Abe GLATT, 29, Drohobycz. Departed 22 July 1891. To New York

My grandfather's family came >from a shtetl called Podhorodce, in the Stryj
Valley, between Stryj and Drohobycz. He and his siblings emigrated to the
UK, one by one, around 1900, and I know nothing about his father, Kalman,
other than that he was a draper in Podhorodce.

Thank you for putting me on to the lead.

Best wishes

Re: Canadian 1901 Census #general

Roberta Sheps <roberta_l_sheps@...>

Arthur Halpern asked how to find the Canadian Censuses online. You
should be able to find the Canadian censuses as they come on line by
going to the ancestry.com website and scrolling through the lists of
free databases and resources that they're currently making available.

Their website is www.ancestry.com

You'll have to look regularly on a weekly basis for the particular town
that interests you, and be prepared to wade through a list of databases
that are of absolutely no interest to you.

As far as I am aware, the Canadian government itself has not put the
census on line, although I could be wrong.

I have to say that depending on when in 1901 Arthur's family went to
Montreal, they may not appear in the census. In fact, and I could be
wrong here, I believe that the census is taken in the year before it's
published, and therefore this one would have been taken in 1900.

But happy hunting anyway.

A Final Attempt at Clarification #general

Brandler Institute of Chasidic Thought <bict@...>

Though I agree with the moderator that this discussion has gone on far too
long and ought to be continued privately, I do wish to respond publicly to
the fact that I have been misquoted. A careful reading of my earlier
messages would indicate that I never insinuated that there was no Jew named
Phoebus, nor was the list I was referring to intended to be anything more
than an aid for researchers - not as it was alleged an "assertion that no
one should be named differently"

I have acknowledged on this list that I erred in making an assertation
regarding the feasibility of a Feivush that was at the same time also called
Phoebus, and I am very grateful to Ury Link, Mrs. Wegner and others for
pointing it out to me. I am also grateful for Ms. Bruckheimer for pointing
out the general danger of such "absolutes" - and I wholeheartedly agree with
her on this point.
Ms. Bruckheimer is one of the many wonderful contributors to this list - and
I personally have gained >from her messages. I wish to publicly apologize for
the inadvertant mispelling of her name.

A general note for anyone with Canadian ties: it appears that
ancestry.com are gradually making the Canadian 1901 Census available
free on a city by city basis. They've put three different cities'
censuses on their site since the beginning of November.

Zelekin, Zholkin, Zholkine #ukraine

Mark_J._Schwartz@...

My great grandfather lists "Zelekin" as his birthplace in Volhynia. The
nearest I can come up with using the ShtetlSeeker is Zholkin. Does anyone
know of the status of this shtetl? It is close to Kovel, Sarny, and Rovno,
but I have found no reference to it in any of the Jewishgen archives. Are
there records or other material that people are aware of for this shtetl?
Other people with ancestors >from this town? Thanks.
