Re: Child Traveling Alone #general

A. E. Jordan

As I understood the various regulations, children traveling alone were not
permitted to enter the United States without a relative, guardian or alike
there to receive them. Maybe this only happened later but at Ellis Island
they tell you that children and women were detained on the Island until
someone called for them.

Anyone know if that is true?

Need help with old addresses in USA for WAGNER #general

Susanna Vendel <susanna.vendel@...>

I just received ca 100 letters dated >from 1947-1953 and learned that my 2
WAGNERS I have been looking for the last 4 years lived in 1947
at the following addresses:

Harry Wagner
Woodland ave
Burbank, California

Juli Wagner

How shall I do to find out what happened to them? Harry Wagner could be in
his 50 ies I suppose. Does anybody recognize these names and places? They

Posting Handwritten documents for translation on the Web #general

David Goldman <davic@...>

Please forgive me for sounding repetitive, fellow Jewishgenners. However,
after examining a number of handwritten documents posted on the Web,
including on ViewMate (an outstanding service on Jewishgen, by the way), I
want to make a plea for people to be exceedingly careful, since not all
such postings of scans turn out clearly; they run the risk of errors in
translation.

Our enterprise in reconstructing our ancestral past is too precious to
allow that to happen. I think my fellow translators can agree that there
can be enough problems deciphering handwritten documents even in hard copy!

So when translations are made of scanned handwritten documents, you should
be alert to possible inadvertent errors due merely to lack of clarity of
the scanned file.

Just my two cents.

In Polish, OWICZ means "son of" while OWNA means "daughter of."

That's why some last names are referred to as patronymic.
Abramowitz, Leibowitz, etc.

Thanks,Jonathan, one more question with regard to OW:

Joskow is the maiden name for Estera?

Jakubow is the maiden name for Blima?
Would the correct relationship, instead, be:

Estera, daughter of Josk?

Blima, daughter of Jakub?

Would there be a surname for these women in the actual record, or are we
getting to a point where surnames were not yet common or required?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Virus again #latvia

Arlene Beare <arl@...>

The following message was posted as an alert. I do not want to get back to
all sorts of mail on virus programmes. Suffice it to say that we should all
have excellent virus programmes installed such as McAfee or Norton
Antivirus. It is very important to see that you update your virus
definitions regularly. Many users think that once they have a virus
programme installed all will be well and fail to recognise that new viruses
are appearing daily.
Arlene Beare
President Latvia SIG

A new virus called W32/ProLin@MM is a high risk Internet virus that is
received via email in the form:
Subject: A great Shockwave flash movie
Body: Check out this new flash movie that I downloaded just now ... It's
Great Bye
Attachment: creative.exe
The infected email can come >from addresses that you recognize. Attached is a
file named CREATIVE.EXE that carries the icon of a Shockwave Media Player
application. However it is not a Shockwave Media Player application and it
will alter files on your hard disk Subsequently, the virus sends a copy of
itself to everyone in your email address book.
Anyone who receives a message "A great Shockwave flash movie" or a message
with the attachment "creative.exe" should not open the message and delete
the message (and empty the trash) immediately.
