Robin,
Think of a SIG as a giant bulletin board. Everyone who reads this
message can comment, add or share ideas, answer questions, and correct
misunderstandings or add facts, all with a little typing and a couple of
mouse clicks. The Ukraine SIG can be that and more. Many of the
JewishGen SIGs are engaged in purchasing and translating metrical
records >from communities in which they are researching, building on-line
databases, and promoting tourism through JewishGen's ShtetlSchleppers
programs, to visit ancestral towns. The ShtetLinks and Yizkor Book
Projects work with the SIGs to commemorate towns and remember those who
perished for the sanctification of the Name. The Ukraine SIG can be all
that and more, depending upon the wants and needs of this group.

Fusgeyers in Ukraine #ukraine

MMBegun@...

Carol Skydell provided some enlightenment on the topic of Fusgeyers. I had
mentioned them in my earlier note about my grandmother's walking out >from
Ukraine.

Carol's note described a movement >from Romania to Hungary, documented in
JewishGen archives. Before I posted my message, I searched on the internet
and (not too thoroughly) in our archives, but I haven't found anything that
addresses Fussgeyer groups leaving Ukraine. Perhaps it's just an informal
application of a movement's name to a similar effort in a neighboring
country. Another speculation is that once in Romania, she (and others like
her) connected with the Fusgeyer's for the remainder of the trip.

In any event, my grandmother had described bribing border guards and boatmen
to take them across rivers into Romania. When I think of what she
accomplished with 3 small children under the age of five in tow, I can only
marvel. Could I have done the same? Once upon a time my three sons were all
under the age of five, so I can visualize this. I doubt that I could have
matched her strength and stamina. Our emigre ancestors were made of sturdy
stuff!
