To Lisa and others, my advice is to request "an exact copy of the SS-5".
If you do not request an exact copy, then a computer generated printout
will be sent.

Searching Yehuda (Yudel) SZWARC, Bialystok Poland ---> Canada #general

Ada Holtzman <ada01@...>

Shalom,

We recently discovered new information regarding the search for a
family, of my friend Jakob Refitkies, a child Holocaust survivor.

His half brother Mosze Szwarc who perished in the Holocaust was
probably the son of Yehuda 9Yudel) Szwarc and Fruma nee' Kaplan. Yehuda was
one brother of 6, all named their first born sons with the name: Moshe.
One of his brother's name was Szymon.
All the 5 brothers, the spouses and the children perished in the Shoa.
Yehuda who was born in the early 1890s was the only one who
stayed alive, because he immigrated to Canada before the War.

We are looking for Yehuda's descandants in Canada who, even if not
directly related, may be have at least a photograph of the first
wife, Fruma, who is Jakob's mother. Jakob doesn't have
any relatives nor any family photographs.

Fruma married afterwards Szejel Refitkies and their first born child was
Rywka, born in 1925. The family lived in Zelazna street in Bialystok.
More details are in the web page:
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Rue/4017/searchin/rapitkes.htm

Any help you may give us is highly appreciated.

Shalom, shana Tova to all

I have not ever seen much written on the underground - I supect there may be
much
on it in the relief committees records at YIVO. My own information comes >from
the
records concerning a relief committee underground member Nathan Dardick a US
citizen formally >from Proskurov [served in the Spanish American war 1898]
-anyway in early 1920 Proskurov he escaped capture with 50,000 of committe
money to help Jews get out of Russia - he and the other committe members fled
into Romaina where they were told many of the area jews had fled. While in
Romaina
everyone but Nathan was captured by the Romainian army. You see both in
Proskurov and were they were staying in Romaina stories quickly spread of the
American Jews with lots of money and troops in both places had come to seize
them but were sucessful in Romaina. Nathan luckily escaped with the money
intact.
The money represented the donations of many many american Jews - I dont know
what 50,000 dollars in 1920 dollars tranlates to today but needless to say its
hundreds of thousands of dollars. I hope to publish a fuller account of this
at some point. Nathan Dardick was the brother of my great grandfather Abram
Herrmann.
Herrmann was also involved in the story in a minor way and he was the father
of the
famed Hollywood music composer Bernard Herrmann.

Ed Meltzer wrote for the population of this Belarus town and questioning
whether it was Polish or Bylorussian during the 1865-1880 period.

His second question is academic because neither country existed during the
period in question. Poland was split up by the major central European
powers in 1848 and did not become an independent nation again until after
World War 1.

Bylorussia or White Russia in English was part of the Imperial Russian
Empire until 1917 when part became a republic of the USSR and the balance
was added to Poland.
After the second World War, the Polish section became part of Bylorussia.
After the downfall of the Soviet government the whole area became the
Independent Republic of Belarus.

Volozhy'n also called Valozhyn is located at map coordinates: 5405 2632
which is 43.8 miles WNW of Minsk. Prior to 1842 the town was part of the
Minsk Gubernia (province) but in 1842 it became part of the Vilno Gubernia
and remained there until 1917, when part of this area was ceded to Poland
and part became Byloruussia.

For further data about the town please see the Shtetls of Belarus data base at:

http://www.jewishgen.org/Belarus/Shtetls/Belarus.htm

Whether this town is part of the Lida Uezd (district) or the Vilieka Uyezd,
I can't say because it is very close to the border between them.

For the population figures, I would look up the town in Where Once We
