Searching: Descendants of Lucille J. ROSS (Harvey Ross) #general

Crumper10 <crumper10@...>

Lucille J. ROSS was born in 1902 and died in August 1989 in Santa Monica,
California. She was my grandfather's half sister.

Her son is Harvey Ross and Lucille has grandchildren. In spite of the fact
that I have her death certificate, know where she is buried, spoke with the
cemetary, spoke with the Rabbi who conducted her funeral, spoke with the
funeral home who conducted her service, have the obituary, checked out
probate (which there is none), checked the post office for the last known
address of her son Harvey (which they do not have), have her social
security application, and have called every Harvey Ross in California, I
cannot locate her son Harvey or her grandchildren.

If Harvey is alive, he would probably be about 75-80 years old. Certainly,
her grandchildren are alive but I do not know their names (they were
mentioned in her obit but not by first or last name).

Does anyone out there have any more ideas as to how I can locate Harvey
Ross or Lucille's Grandchildren. Is there anyone out there >from Santa
Monica who may have known Lucille or her son Harvey??

Please contact me if you have any information.

Thanks.

If anyone has connections in the NE, might there be
any information on Elswick Cemetery, Newcastle-on-Tyne.
Is this Cemetery still in existence? And if so, under
whose auspices?

I am aware of the excellent website:

I am keen to get details on the gravestones of

Solomon SANDMAN- died 1919, buried row 2. &
Jeanette SANDMAN-died 1913, buried row 6.

Could anyone translate the Hebrew text, if any, on the stones?

New book on Lodz synagogues and prayer houses #lodz #poland

Seflaum@...

Dear Fellow Researchers,

An important new book on Jewish Lodz was published this year: "Synagogues and
Prayer Houses of Lodz (to 1939)," by noted Lodz historian Jacek Walicki, in
both Polish and English. It is a fascinating look at why and how all the
major synagogues and many prayer houses were founded in Lodz, and by whom. It
includes photos (before and after the Nazi destruction), drawings and plans
of the synagogues.

Appendix I includes a never before published chart of all the prayer houses
in Lodz -- I counted about 300 prayer houses! The chart includes the prayer
house's "police address", the property's real estate registration/mortgage
number, date (ranges >from 1873-1937), names of the elders (gaboim), number of
people registered in the prayer house, and source of information.

For those of you interested in this book, here is the specific information:

I have the Social Security application of one of my grandfather's
relatives. He bore the surname of his mother.

I was told that up until the early 1900's, a couple could not be married
in a civil ceremony if they could not afford the fee for a civil marriage. However, they could be married in a religious ceremony. If there was no civil ceremony, any children born of that marriage had to take the surname of the mother.

Has anyone else heard this? Does anyone have documentation?

Has anyone else heard this? Does anyone have documentation?
