Try contacting HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, that helped arrange
many of the immigrations to this country (and still does). They have a
search they will conduct and may be able to tell you more. This is how my
grandmother was able to document her arrival in 1917 when she applied for
Social Security in the 1960's. Website is www.hias.org

P.S. Where did you find the original mention of the immigration? Is it
possible that a number was read wrong? I went "off-track" in reading the
indices when I mistook an "8" for a "6", so I would check.

I'm at a loss for what to do. I need help desperately.

In searching the immigrations records in Phila., I came across an Israel
Pickholz, age 21, nationality n.g., occupation n.g., ship Sicilian, 1905.
No other information is shown on the card. Research has shown this ship
never came to Phila. in 1905 as the records for Phila. show. The NARA
cannot find him as a passenger during that year in any East Coast port on
the Sicilian. I've tried not only the Sicilian but the Sicilian Prince
and the Sicila, no results.

What can I do? Where do I go?

Do you have a need for analysis or translations of book titles, letters
or gravestone photos? Do you have questions about old family photos,
maps or book pages? ViewMate is JewishGen's newest tool, designed to
supplement the written query, and help you to solve graphic riddles.
Here is an example of how it works. Follow along now with Jack, our
demonstrator.

Jack finds an unidentified family photo with an inscription on the back,
written in what appears to be Hebrew script.

He scans it on his home PC system, creating a graphic file.

Then he goes to the ViewMate (VM) website. Using the easy upload feature,
he uploads his graphic file to VM. Jack soon receives an e-mail
confirmation with a file number.

He then posts a notice to the JewishGen Discussion Group (or SIG of his
choice) stating that he has uploaded a photo to VM. He requests someone
knowledgeable in Hebrew to visit the VM website, view his graphic
(File No. X) and translate it for him.

An eager reader will be quick to provide feedback. Eager reader responds
with translation. Riddle solved. Jack adds new info to his tree.

Its as easy as 1-2-3.
1- Scan on your home PC system.
2- Upload to ViewMate.
3- Request feedback.

You are invited to visit us today to make use of this newest JewishGen
tool. The site has FAQ and full instructions.

My Litvaks pronounced a long "O" as a long "A" in which case ROZ would be
RAIZ. (I'm assuming the "O" is a transliterated Vav).

A Russian or Lithuanian clerk would likely write "ROIZ" (in Cyrillic) when
the name ROZ was pronounced by a Litvak.

Lists of names that periodically are contributed to JewishGen #general

Ernest Fine <efine@...>

Periodically, people contribute lists of names in their postings -
names >from a census page, names of survivors of a concentration camp,
names >from a ship manifest, names >from a cemetery section, whatever...

I'd like to suggest that before the names are posted, that the originator
please *alphabetize* the list, by surname. Especially for some of the
longer lists! While a bit more work for the poster, it would save time for
the thousands of us who regularly read such lists looking for surnames.

What major city would Belmar, New Jersey be located near?

Looking for information of Julius LEWIS of Belmar, New Jersey- probably
born in Lithuania circa the 1860s. He probably died between 1900 and

Re: Private Investigators #belarus

Ernest Fine <efine@...>

Another aspect to this is that the "business" name is an address at AOL.
Note that it is very easy for an individual to take ANY name they want to,
on AOL. I am extra cautious when dealing with any unknown person who has an
AOL id.

I'd still be cautious if the email address were something like
george@ainvestigations.com, but at least I could check out who they are, or
claimed to be, because they'd have to take the step of registering their
domain name.

Be careful out there...

I just received a question about one of the names I am researching
from a private investigator. The URL was AINVESTIGATIONS@aol.com.
I sensed it was not a genealogist and asked if it was a private
investigator. When they confirmed, I refused to supply any data
about the name he was investigating.
