Another aspect to this is that the "business" name is an address at AOL.
Note that it is very easy for an individual to take ANY name they want to,
on AOL. I am extra cautious when dealing with any unknown person who has an
AOL id.

I'd still be cautious if the email address were something like
george@ainvestigations.com, but at least I could check out who they are, or
claimed to be, because they'd have to take the step of registering their
domain name.

Be careful out there...

I just received a question about one of the names I am researching
from a private investigator. The URL was AINVESTIGATIONS@aol.com.
I sensed it was not a genealogist and asked if it was a private
investigator. When they confirmed, I refused to supply any data
about the name he was investigating.

Joseph Rothenberg mentioned that immigrants tended not to talk about the
old country to their children. I can go one better than that - my
maternal grandmother, Faygel PEKER ROSENBERG, >from Korostyshev, Kiev
gulburnya, didn't even mention the fact that she had three brothers, two
sisters, three step-sisters and a half-sister! We had assumed she was
an only child until her half-sister's grandson (Paul MALEVITZ, Los
Angeles)located me in 1992 and gave me an extensive family tree.

Dear Stewart,
Saul is not the only one looking for BRONSTEIN's. I may have been
limiting myself by restricting the spelling to the spelling on the
naturalization papers. They were relying on immigrants who didn't speak or
spell English to transliterate Ukranian into English to fill out the
documents. Besides all the common barriers of language, time, etc., I may
have been looking in the wrong places although the Jewishgen family
finder should have accounted for this. Anyway, my family comes >from either
Stepivka, Tarasivka, or Elizabetgrad (now Kirovohrad) ,Ukraine around
1907 .My grandfather Berel (Benjamin BROWN) BRONSTEIN (BRAUNSTEIN,
BRONSHTEYN,etc) left Glascow ,Scotland on 12/0/07 & arrived in NYC on
12/23/07 via the SS Caledonia. His family was killed in a pogrom around
Oct. 1905 possibly related to the October uprising in 1905. They also had
a business which was coveted by a war-poor tsarist regime. Since I only
know part of his immediate family's names, I couldn't confirm any
relatives. I am currently having a researcher there try to uncover
information about their deaths & births of their clan.
Please let me know if any of this sounds familar to you.
Thanx

shumsk gravestones translation #ukraine

Lynne Tolman <ltolman@...>

I know someone in the Boston area who has recent (1998) slides of all 175
gravestones in the remaining Jewish cemetery in Shumsk (near Kremenets). My
cousin M. and I planned to catalog these -- translate the inscriptions and
create a searchable database to be made available via Internet -- but now
M. can no longer participate. I am willing to work with someone in the
Boston or Worcester, Mass., area to accomplish this. I can barely read
Hebrew/Yiddish, so translating is where I need help; my contribution would
be the organization & database. We don't think the pictures are high enough
quality to be readable online (such as with
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate ), so we'd have to sit down together and
look at them on a big screen.
Maybe we could meet once every other month or so until we get through all
the slides. I think we could get through about 20 slides per sitting.
Anyone interested?

I'm researching TOLMAN/TULLMAN, BERG/BERGER, BAKER/BIK, KLOTZ/GOLD -- from
Shumsk.

FW: YIDDISH - Help with translation #warsaw #poland

Max Heffler

I would appreciate help with identifying two towns of origin, one in
Galicia, and one in Romania, >from my great/grand uncle's naturalization.
Also, there is a back of a photograph taken in Tarnopol believed to me my
great grandfather that I would assistance in translating. All three of these
can be found at:

The letter can be found at
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/

They are in the 'To View' section as files VM014, VM015, and VM016.

I would also like some assistance in translating some Yiddish on a card,
which I expect to be made available at the same site shortly.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello,
My grandmother's papers indicate that she came >from Bielcza, which was
then part of Austria before reverting to Poland.
Miriam Weiner's book indicates that at the time of the Shoah, only 2-3
Jewish families were living there. I have managed to track down two
people >from them, both Catholic. No one is able to tell me where I
might look for records. Also, wouldn't it be unusual for only 2-3
Jewish families to be living in a village like this?
Thanks for any info or suggestions.

Thanks for handwriting help #general

Thanks to all who helped with the handwriting sample I put on ViewMate
(003). It was a real stumper, but there were some people who, amazingly
enough, were able to decipher it. The consensus so far is that it says,
"Clare im Alter von 23 Jahren, Sommer 1919."

I am impressed & grateful for the quick feedback.

I agree. This is the purpose of the custom. It is quite universal now
(though I must admit I had not personally seen it up to about 20 years
ago) and an example was seen in the film "Shindler's List".
Doing some research some years ago I came across some correspondence
about the custom in the 'Jewish Chronicle' (London) in 1907. It was
referred to as a 'curious custom' observed in Frankfort some years
earlier, so that the implication was that it was not followed amongst
English Jews at the time. Ensuing correspondence in the paper suggested
that the origin of the custom was the Midrash Rabbah and also in the
Yoreh Deah of the Shulchan Aruch.
