Holiday wishes and a short farewell #general

Frieda Libaw <fbl2@...>

To All Genners,
I wish you the best of the holiday season. I shall be celebrating with
my family in France. I haven't see them in over three years and while
some of us are growing older, we have quite a few new family members who
have joined is in the last three years. I am looking forward with
pleasurable anticipation to seeing the new babies.
I'll only be gone for three weeks but I think it would be wise for me to
unsubscribe until my return on October 25th.
My best wishes to all of you.
Frieda Libaw

This is one of
the great myths of Jewish immigration and it refuses to die. Please read
the
volumes of information on this subject in the Jewishgen archived messages.

I agree. I found in my family research that more distortions of the family
name were done by the ship's officers when they went to spell the person's
name in the ship's passenger manifest, which the INS used in processing the
new arrival, thus unwittingly making the 'new name' official.

Howard Rensin.
Howard,

In my opinion none of this qualifies as someone else "making" the name
change. When analyzing this name phenomenon, it is necessary to "put your
head" into the situation the immigrant found himself in at the time of the
passage. The passenger states his name for ship's purser who is processing
the list. The purser spells out, phonetically, the name as he hears it. How
often do you suppose he heard, "I beg your pardon sir, but my name is spelled
SOSNOVSKY not SASNOWSKY" as in the case of my grandmother? [She could have
added, "When we get to Philadelphia, we will spell it SOSNOFFSKY and/or
SOSNOFSKY."]

In my MEZHIRITZKY (my generic spelling) family I have many manifests. In
almost all, the name on the manifest is spelled a different way, however all
but one are phonetically pronounced MES=UR-IT-SKY and fall into the soundex
code M263. I found out later that this one fellow, of the exception, had a
bit of a lisp.

Please let's exercise a little bit of common sense. Judge the situation by
the conditions prevalent at that time in history -- not the standards of
today.

How many of us in the West (whose present day native language is English,
French, German or Spanish) if we were entering Russia today and were faced
with same situation, would be able to say to the person writing in Cyrillic,
"you have spelled my name incorrectly"?
