Re: How to find UKRAINE birth and marriage records #ukraine #records #russia

Bonnie Gould

I too am trying to research my Ukrainian family, Rabinovich or Rabinowich who originated in Ruzhyn, Ukraine.  Are there records available and any suggestions as to the best place to search? Shulim Rabinovitz, son of Yisrael, married to Matle.  Matle's name shows as Indick, but I doubt that is her original surname. All the children show Rishin, now Ruzhyn as their birthplace.

Researching: Rabinovitz(wich) from Ruzhyn,Ukraine; Peker/Pekier from Kapyl, Belarus; Perlin from Timkovichi, Belarus; Altman from Warsaw, Poland

Deanna Levinsky <DEANNASMAC@...>

In researching the list of those killed at Babi Yar I found the following citation

«Память Бабьего Яра. Книга мартиролог» / Составитель В. А. Згурский. Киев: газеты "Хвилина мовчання" и "Молода гвардія". 1991. С. 862. «Бабий Яр: Книга памяти» / Составитель И. М. Левитас. Киев: Сталь, 2005. С. 350
This might relate to a relative and would appreciate help

Judy,
Sorry to disagree with everyone but you might want to check this article in NYT about GED Match.  https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/01/technology/gedmatch-breach-privacy.html .They bought out the founding company in December and then proceeded to release info of abt a million people to law enforcement without users permission.  I closed my account when I found this out.

Ms. Miller,

You are very welcome.

I'm afraid that I don't have any good suggestions (other than:  google like mad) for learning more.  I'm sure that others here will have more concrete ideas.

Have an easy and meaningful fast.

Reply to David Barrett,

Yes, the stone does "clearly" say that he died in Kislev.  In the English text, it says just as "clearly" that he died on the 5th of December, which would put the date in Tevet.

I was merely pointing out this discrepancy.

The original poster has now pointed out that the secular date was the one in error, so Kislev it is.

Have a Gmar Chatimah Tovah.

My family MANN/LICHTENSTEIN from Perleberg #names #germany

Tamm

Hello,

I searched really long, but unfortunately couldn't find anything. Is
there anyone who could help me? It's about my direct ancestors, Isaak
Mann and Nanny Lichtenstein. The only documents I have received say
that they lived in Perleberg, Prignitz, Germany around 1840. I also
know the names of their parents, but I don't get any further either.
Unfortunately, nobody can tell me where they came from. Unfortunately,
I only have estimated dates of birth. Does anyone know where I can
find more information?

Thank you so much!

Papers Past Access to 78 New Zealand Newspapers #announcements

Jan Meisels Allen

The National Library of New Zealand,  has Papers Past which is its searchable website with over 150 newspapers from New Zealand and the Pacific.  Papers Past may be accessed at: https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/

The National Library has released the data from 78 New Zealand newspapers all published before 1900.

Dataset is a data pilot where you can download the information from the pilot program.  More about this can be read at:

https://natlib.govt.nz/about-us/open-data/papers-past-metadata/papers-past-newspaper-open-data-pilot/dataset-papers-past-newspaper-open-data-pilot

The data will be available for 12 months, and then after reviewing the pilot, they’ll decide whether to maintain, retire or expand the offering.

Access to historic newspaper data offers new opportunities for research into areas such as history, language, and global culture, and over the years, the Library has had several requests for access to Papers Past data to support such research.

The data has been released openly, so people can do anything they like with it (although they do ask people to please credit the source).

Deborah

FREDEL, THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP.

I pulled my great grandfather's death certificate and found out that the date of death reflected on the tombstone is incorrect. According to the death certificate, he died December 3
1918 at 10:05 am. The death certificate also indicates that he died of a fractured skull, intracranial hemorrhage, and traumatic shock noting "accidental." He died at St. Marks Hospital.

I am still clueless where I would find any articles./obituaries where I could find out more detail. Yiddush Newspaper? local newspaper? Any suggestions.

Thank you. Have an easy fast.  Deborah Miller

JoAnne Goldberg

I didn't notice if anyone has mentioned the Golden State Killer, whose
identity was inferred via DNA from distant cousins. The fact is that
it's too late for privacy in that regard. The DNA is out there, and
governments have DNA databases, though your DTC testing company
information is relatively safe -- until the vendor is hacked! Most of us
have been fingerprinted more than once; few of us are concerned about that.

So my first argument to anyone reluctant to test is "the FBI/CIA/NSA may
already know what your DNA says -- don't you want to know what they know?"

For relatives who are privacy obsessed, and I totally get that, I have
ordered kits in my name, entered them into the vendor's system,
repackaged and sent to the relative who can take the test and drop it,
postage-paid,  in the mailbox. The kit has a pseudonym so the relative's
identity is protected. Could a DNA sleuth figure out the likely identity
of the kit? Sure, but who's going to bother? Personally, I have no
illusions about privacy, and think it's funny when banks etc ask for
info like date of birth, hometown,  or mother's birth surname as "proof"
of identity when all that information is readily accessible online.

People should keep in mind that laws, guarantees, attitudes, procedures, techniques, etc. can all change with time.  What is done now, or what can be done now, is no guide to what may be done in the future.  Even if you discount data theft, there are ways that profiles can come into the open.  Can a DNA-testing company sell its collection of data to an entity with different ideas about privacy?  What if the company is bought by someone interested in accessing its DNA files?  Can data, or even the company, be seized under a court order?

Once you have had your DNA profiled, that cannot be undone.  What will happen to that data, and to what uses it might be put, cease to be under your control.

Berestechko, Demidovka are in Dubna county Volyn province
A Revision list gets translated by Google as a "Fairy Tale"
Alex K has posted 1850 and 1858 revision lists for these towns - I have posted the links and you are in luck in that he has also posted the town detail within each list.  The numbers next to the town names represent the pdf page numbers where each town's data begins - so while these are in Cyrillic and as yet not translated - this will make it much easier to search for your family names.

You can use the Steve Morse websites to show your family names in Cyrillic cursive and then compare.

Alex has posted revision lists from 1858 but unfortunately without details of towns.  Here are the links:

Re: Bukofzer / Oppenheimer in France FRENCH records #france

David Choukroun

Dear David, (nice first name :)

You will have part of the answer most probably into the Fond de Moscou file where there is a reference about Fritz
The right reference to ask to the French Archive Nationale is 19940435/16 (this was into the 1st supplementary list -- see below)
You might want also to check all the other files with the same name (quite unusual). I have seen about 10 other files -- possibly the same family

The other source I have in mind is the Archives of the Prefecture de Paris :
https://www.prefecturedepolice.interieur.gouv.fr/Nous-connaitre/Services-et-missions/Service-de-la-memoire-et-des-affaires-culturelles/Les-archives-de-la-prefecture-de-police
Unfortunately, the Covid is preventing to search (on-site only) for this 2nd one  - We need to wait a possible re-opening in the next months to come

I guess you tried already the decennale table of Paris (for the marriage)

All the best
David

US Visa applications circa 1948? Do copies exist? #records #usa

A. E. Jordan

Has anyone had any success in getting a copy of a visa application for someone coming to the USA in 1948 for a visit? What information is contained and was the effort warranted to get it or did it not help?

I spotted someone arriving in 1948 in New York on a passenger list coming from Cairo, Egypt who might be the wife of  relative.  The passenger list shows a visa number.

So the first question would be did copies of the applications end up in the USA, so is there a file for me to even look for on this person?

She arrives in the spring of 1948 and I see her flying outbound in the fall so I know the time frame she was in the USA too. The passenger list tells me the name and address of her son saying that's where she is coming from and  the name and address of the person she is going to be staying with the USA. The family name is the same but it does not tell me how the person coming for the visit is related to the person she is visiting.

Second question if I go for the file what more could I hope to learn if anything?

Third if someone has recent direct experience ... what is the process and did you feel it was worth it in the end?

Thank you. Easy Fast to all who observe.

Allan Jordan

I've had trouble finding records because names are mispelled or othewise mangled. What kinds of searches have you used to overcome this problem? I'm guessing every site has different tools...
