Re: "Researchers" submitting Yad Vashem Pages of Testimony #holocaust #israel

Adam et. al.,

I forwarded your question to the Director of Yad Vashem Hall of Names -  Dr. Alexander Abraham.

He answered me the following reply and asked that his reply be posted here:

Yad VaShem checked Mr. Xavier Messalati. He is an amateur researcher:

- He started with victims from France: found names in various publications from the time of the Holocaust

- Then he went on with names from different places: he found the information from all sorts of sources, even from the Internet, where they are scattered. Some source were unlikely to be reached by Yad VaShem.

- According to Yad VaShem's checks, his material is reliable. Of course there might also be errors, as with anyone else.

- He also locates and sends photos and this is very important for Yad VaShaem.

- Regarding "duplications", Yad VaShem is working very hard on it.

- Regarding updating the database every 3 months: The Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names
is not an independent database: it is linked to other  Yad VaShem databases. For this reason it is impossible to update the database more frequently - it depends on updating all the other databases every 3 months.

Joel Weintraub has addressed the problem of missing manifest entries on this forum before.
I recommend his Jewishgen Info File on the subject.

It would certainly help if you could locate the immigration manifest.  Your relative may have arrived at a port other than NYC, such as Philadelphia or Boston.  You can also check European records, such as Hamburg passenger manifests.

I agree with Jill about looking for possible spelling variations.  Also consider transcription errors:  just yesterday I found a record for a Rosenblatt whose surname was mistakenly transcribed as "Rosenblabb."  You could try doing wild card searches, too.

I have queried the Luxembourg Archives for documents from my family. I believe they are closed now-I did this earlier in the year. However, when I did my search on their website, it was necessary to know what the contents of files represented and that is not very clear.
I suggest you write directly to the archives for guidance. Milton Koch

Looking to find a researcher for help in tracing family in Belarus #belarus

shanskyf@...

Hi,

I am 71 years old and am trying to trace my family, all of whom came to the US from Belarus in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Is there anyone any of you know who does such work? I could even use help in working thru the JewishGen website, which contains a lot of information, but is beyond my expertise. Of course, I am willing to pay for any and all work. Thanks.

Re: Help with Brick Wall -- tracing Isaac Greenblat #russia #poland

Jill Whitehead

Have you looked at spelling variations on the name Greenblat and Grinblat? My great grandmother Rachel Grymblat (sic) was born in Suwalki in NE Poland in c1840 and came to Manchester, UK with her husband  Chackiel Ceglarski (changed his name to Nathan Abrahams, later Abrams on arrival) in 1867/8. she died in Manchester in 1921. Her eldest son Abraham was born in Suwalki in 1867, but her other 8 children were born in Manchester, including my grandmother Hannah in 1876.

Hello apparently the National Archives will be reopening shortly. The Moscow Fund is interesting to find relatives that have had problems with the french authorities or were considered suspicious (communists/komintern, foreign agents, agitators....)

Identification of two Offenbach youth groups y #germany

sohail.husain@...

This is a rather obscure request! I am researching and writing the life stories of my mother, Karola GRÜNEBAUM, and her parents (Sophie and Friedrich), who lived in Offenbach am Main. She was born in 1921, attended the Jewish school when it opened in 1934, completed an apprenticeship at Alligator leather company and worked there until December 1938. She escaped to London in August 1939 but her parents were transported to Theresienstadt in 1942 and then to Auschwitz, never to return.

I am attaching two photographs from my mother’ album, which I believe were taken in Offenbach probably in the early 1930s. One shows a girls’ youth group in uniform and I would like to know if this is the uniform of Girl Guides (Pfadfinderinnen) or whether it is some other youth group.

The second shows a girls’ sports team in rather wet and muddy conditions. My first thought was that this could be a hockey team, but there are no hockey sticks, so I wonder if it could be a different sport. If anyone can shed light on this, I’d be grateful.

Of course, if anyone recognises the photos and can provide any other information, that would be fantastic.

Many thanks
