Welcome to Vranov! #hungary

Hello Friends,

Here is a brief tour in Vranov thanks to Bobby Furst who kindly
photographed the stones in the cemetery!!!

from my research(southern Zemplen) I have been always baffled by the
concentration of the given names to a very limited number of popular
ones, as if the broad base bank of Hebrew names was taboo. Also heard
that the formal names were for civil purposes only and were supplemented
by Jewish names.

This is the why I was interested in viewing some cemetery records.
Indeed it is clear that in Vranov the Jews have not forgotten the more
elaborate names. A few additional observations:

Vranov was clearly the stronghold of the Friedmans!! There is quite some
liberty in the format of the names, at times the name of the husband
appears, many times the last name, one the name of the grandfather-- as
he was an important person. In two cases the name of the village of
origin is shown. No stone contained Latin or Cyrillic lettering. Here,
see it for yourself:

What Is Komorocz? #hungary

Vivian Kahn

Can anyone tell me what Komorocz means? There was a small place identified
as Szobrancz Komorocz or Komoro just south of Szobrancz. This place was
enumerated separately in 1828 and is listed separately in the 1877
Gazetteer. I notice that there is also a place called Komarocz (with an
"a" rather than an "o") in Zemplen megye. I've checked my Hungarian
dictionary and all I can find is "komor" which means gloomy or sombre.

Hungarian/Croatian first Name #hungary

Ed Zwieback <ezwiebac@...>

A puzzle.
I have a photograph of my cousin Ilona Kohn (at age 23) and her
boyfriend/husband (?), dated 1929 >from Varazdin, Croatia (just south of Zala
County, Hung.). The handwritten inscription on the back is all in German
"Zum...Tante").
They sign the photo with their 1st names: "Ilus und ?arian". I know that
Ilus is the diminutive of Ilona. I want to know the name of her boyfriend.
His name (6 characters) starts with a letter that most closely looks like a
capital U except the bottom is sharp, not rounded. At first, I thought it
was a capital N but the middle is slanted the wrong direction. So my reading
could be UARIAN; that's a strange name. I can't match this up to a common
Hungarian first name. Maybe it's a Croatian name. Any ideas for this male
name; giventhe place and time?
Thanks,

3. Do you know somebody authorized to search the archives in order to
get the information, and the cost of it?

-----------------------------------------------------------------
The family FRIEDMAN / FREEDMAN / FRIDMAN of Pinsk, Kosciuszko st.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues

I am searching the family FRIEDMAN / FREEDMAN / FRIDMAN of Pinsk,
Kosciuszko st. \ Groissa Gass (Polish \ Yiddish, untill 1939(?))
and Lenina (Russian, 1939(?) till 1993).

As far as I know there were many branches of the FRIEDMAN family,
even in Pinsk, and my ancestors are one of these families.

Following is the information I do know about them. I am interested in
to get more information and details about my family?

My Mother's Grand Father Mordechai, son of Yechiel Michl FRIEDMAN,
was born in 1841, in Pinsk (?), and died at May 28th 1916 in Petha
Tikva, today Israel than part of the Turkish Empire. He was buried
in Petha Tikva.

Mordechai FREEDMAN has 7 descendants, I don't know the order they were born: -

1. Rivka who married one Mr. Roizman / Rossman and left to the USA.
I don't know if she left before or after her marrige.
Her descendants were: - Mini, Rose and Jossef
I have no connections with them.

2. Zlate who married one Mr. Winshtein - I know nothing more about her.

3. Netanel who married his niece Feige Rosen / Rozen, and left to the
USA.
They have one daughter Miryam/Miriam/Miki, who lives in N.Y.
I have no connections with her.

4. Shifra, born 1863 (?), who was married to one Mr.ROSEN/ROZEN, and
left to the USA.
Her descendants were:- Sara, Mendel, Michael, Netanel and Feige.
Feige was married her uncle Netanel, the son of Mordechai Freedman,
see above.
After Mr. ROSEN/ROZEN died (?) Shifra left the USA to Israel, then
Palestine, and married one Meir FYALKOV >from Petha Tikva, he was
born in the area of Pinsk as well, we'll return to him later.
Shifra and Meir had no children together.
Shifra died at Oct. 22nd 1948.

5. Fige Lea who married one Mr. SMISZOVSKI.
Her descendants were:- Miryam/Miriam and Mordechai.
I know nothing more about them.

6. Shmaayia / Shmaryau who married Sara-Sonyia
His descendants were:- Miryam/Miriam, Rachel and Hayim/Fima.
Rachel was married to Zeev/weve FREEDMAN, a first cousin of her.

7. Alexsander Zizekind \ Sisel who married Rachel MEDNIK - My grand-
parents. They were born at 1870-1872 and were murdered in 1943
during the Holocaust in Pinsk
See later the - "The List of 18,350".
Their descendants are:-

a. Michael/Michl, born 18.3.1893, who married Dvora KAPLAN.
After the Second World War they come to Israel with their
two daughters, Nechama and Mina, and son, Shimon, who were
all born in Pinsk.
The two daughters and son have their children and even
grand-children, all in Israel.

b. Arie/Leib, born 8.10.1896, who married Zipora/Feige
SKAKALSKI.
Arie/Leib died during the Second World War in Russia.
Zipora/Feige and their two daughters, Shulamit and Rivka/Riva,
and son, Shimon, came to Israel. The two daughters and son
have their children and even grand children, all in Israel.

I have found in that list:-

8. If it is possible I would like to get more information on my
grandmother's family - the MEDNIK family. Some of the members of
MEDNIK family lived also in Pinsk, Kosciuszko st.\Groissa Gass
(Polish\Yiddish, until 1939) and Lenina (Russian, 1939 till 1993).

9. Paragraph 4 above deals also with Shifra and Meir FYALKOV >from Petha
Tikva. The parents of Meir FYALKOV, were Jossef/Yossef the son of
Zeev and Shifra the daughter of Yechiel.
They left to Israel, than Palestine before 1893. They lived and died
in Petah-Tiqwa.
I have a reason to think that the father of Shifra FYALKOV wife of
Yossef, Yechiel, was the father of my Mother's Grand Father
Mordechai, son of Yechiel Michl.
Is it possible to check my idea and to find whether Mordechai, son
of Yechiel Michl Friedman, my Mother's Grand Father was a brother
of Shifra Fyalkov daughter of Yechiel >from Pinsk, wife of Yossef
FYALKOV???
If it is possible I would like to get more information on the
FYALKOVs.

If there are any questions please refer.

Thank you in advance, hoping to hear >from you soon.

Yours Sincerely,
