Thanks on: Ancestors were Christians Converted to Jews?
#general
Jfpol <jfpol@...>
Thanks to the many of you who responded to my query about oral history of
my Jewish great great grandparents (nobility?) being converted Christians. their name is Moskovitz. This was in mid 19th century Austria. Some of you suggested that I look for greater verification, which I will through another distant branch of this family I have learned about. Other interesting responsese were that in the 30 Years War (1618-1648) christians converted to Judaism for safety. There are many stories from Moravia during this period. Also, a January 1979 article in "Cathedra" magazine by Yuval Dror discusses Russian Converts to Judaism in the 19th century Galilee area. Also in 19th century Ukraine a large number of Gentiles converted. This is told among the Breslover Chassidim. I'm still not sure about what to make of my story, but I will keep looking. steven weiss <szome@...>
I located a microfilm of a book in Russian titled, "Guberniya Committees
Concerning the Jewish Question", 1884, published in Russia by the 'Russia Imperial Commission for the Review of Laws Applying to Jews in the Empire'. The book is over 2,000 pages and is divided by guberniyas. Following is a translation of the table of contents for the Kovno Guberniya section. The translation is by Alexander Sharon. <Works of the Kovno Commission on the Jewish Question I. Findings of the meetings established by the Kovno Commission on the Jewish Question , page 1 1. What specific aspects of the Jewish economical activities mostly influence the basic life of the genuine population of Kovno Gubernia, page 2 2. What are the practical problems encountered during an application of the current Jewish legislations, page 10 3. What changes in the current Jewish legislations should be introduced, to prevent evasion of the rules by the Jews, and to paralyze harmful Jewish influence on the daily life of the genuine population, page 11 II.Notes concerning harmful Jewish influence on the economical life of the genuine population, page 24 III. Paper presentation by the Knyshov, Chairman of the Kovno Association of the Justices of Peace concerning box taxes, page 32 IV Paper presentation by Skugarevski, manager of income tax (excise) office and member of the Commission on the Jewish Question, page 43 IV. About the Cheders, page 48 V Presentation by Mr. Kagan on Talmud Torah, page 59> A copy of the book itself is in the Library of Congress under the title: "Trudy Gubernskikh kommisii po evreiskomu voprosu" Steven Weiss Chicago

Need Help In Contacting Family Member In Jerusalem, Israel
#general
Ricki L. Zunk <rickiz@...>
Is there a kind soul who might be able to make a "local" phone call
for us in Jerusalem? We believe that we've learned of another "missing" family member living there. I can't speak, read, or write Hebrew, and I don't know if he can communicate in English. Before I got through all sorts of unnecessary steps, I'd like to know what my options are with this man. Please reply privately to me at rickiz@mindspring.com Thanks, (Mrs.) Ricki Randall Zunk Miami, FL

Looking for information on the GUTMAKER family
#general
JAGUTMAKER <jagutmaker@...>
I am seeking any information on the Gutmaker family. My understanding is
that the name was originally Guttmacher (and I do know of the Alan Guttmacher branch in New York that traces back to Rabbi Elijah Guttmacher in Silesia -- I may be related to them, but that is not my direct line). My grandfather's name was Dr. Hymen Gutmaker, born in Philadelphia (Sept 10, 1909). His father was Joseph Gutmaker (born March 13, 1888) of New York m (1) Rose (I think her maiden name was Resnick -- she was born on Sept 10, 1888) (divorced) (2) Sarah (not sure of her maiden name, but her birthdate was March 24, 1898) Joseph's family immigrated >from Kiev, Ukraine. Joseph was a furrier in NYC until his death. I believe Joseph had a brother or uncle named Benjamin. Using ancestry.com, I found a reference to a John Gutmaker in Illinois in 1860...but have no idea who he was. That's about all the information I have on this line. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jen Gutmaker

Dear Genners,
My gfather, Mojzesz ben Josef FEINBERG, was born in Bielsk-Podlaski (Poland) 5/25/1862 and died in Antwerp (Belgium) 2.16.1927. He married my gmother Rachel LEVINSON 8.20.1889 in Vilna (Lithuania). I was informed by one genner that there is a list of 1835 births, marriages and deaths on a LDS film #1,191,937 of Bielsk-Podlaski on permanent loan in the Mormon Family History Center in New York. I went to the local LDS in Nice but they informed me there would be up to a 6 months delay to get it here. Perhaps there is a good soul somewhere who could have a look for my ancestors on that film and keep me posted. TIA. Roger FEINBERG Antibes (France) searching: Mojzesz ben Josef FEINBERG (Bielsk-Podlaski, Poland), David LEVINSON, Abram KASCOVIC (Vilna area); Mordeck Michelevetz ANCELEVICH, Rubka JANKELIOLNA, Cha=EFm and Chesha BAMDAS, Jacob SMORGONSKY and Sophie KOWASKI (Minsk area); Baruch SCHUR and Sarah TRAUB (Plungjany). Dear Genners,
My maternal gfather, Jacob GROSZ, son of Forkos GROSZ and Guisa SCHWARTZ, was born in Dragabartfalva 8.15.1865. 45 Jews lived in that village at that time. They were part of the Jewish Community of Bilki (or Brod?), who had 628 Jewish souls. Dragabartfalva was in the komtat (arrondissement) of Felvidek in the province of Bereg, S.E. of Munkacs. In 1918, after the dismanteling of Austro-Hungary, it went to Tchecoslovakia and in 1938 became Ukraine with name of Dorogratovo.
