Where should I look for divorce paperwork?
#galicia
Jessica Skippon <jskippon@...>
My great-grandparents (Viktor Schanzer and Fani Borger Birn (a widow)
were said to have divorced before my grandmother was born in 1885 in Andrychau. He remarried two years later in Wadowice. The Wadowice marriage register 1877-1928 is the only Jewish register >from a wide area of southern Poland that I have found. from the middle of the 19th century, the Jewish people were given 'equalrights'. I assume that meant there children were no longer considered illegitimate because their parents were not married in a church. How would a divorce have been registered? How common was a religious divorce - would there have been civil divorces? from my search for Galician army registrations in Vienna, I have learnedthat all those records pertaining to the area that became Polish were sent to Poland at the end of WWI, in this case Krakow. It would be useful to know the practice around divorce. Jessica Skippon SCHANZER, BORGER, BIRN (looking for Ignatz), JACHZEL, GELLER, GLUCKSMAN, JOACHIMSMANN Andrychau, Bielsko Biala, Wadowice

Rabbi Yechiel Keuhl
#austria-czech
Bernard,
A quick visit to the HebrewBooks.org website and the ability to write the name of the Zichron Yechiel book in Hebrew, you will find this book, http://hebrewbooks.org/42499. If you can read Hebrew, at the beginning is a little blurb that tells you that he was the rabbi in a town (that was hard to locate in Latin letters, and now known as) Tyrawa-Woloska (see http://www.geshergalicia.org/towns/tyrawa-woloska/) in Poland. He also served as a rabbi in what is now Nowy Sacz, and in his old age he was well received in Sanok, where he died and was buried. I hope this helps you in your quest for more information. I am also copying the Geser Galicia SIG on this, since this might yield more information for you. Searching the New York Passenger Lists in One Step CORRECTION
#germany
Ellen Barnett Cleary
I had an incorrect link in my message posted yesterday, so wanted to post
this correction. I knew the name of the ship my ancestor immigrated on and the time period he arrived in the US. I wanted to figure out how to find that passenger list. I learned that you can go to stevenmorse.org and search for the name of a ship. Someone did this leg of the work for me and told me the vessel "St Laurent" sailed into New York, but had I not known this, I could have just searched the listed ports that included the year 1867. It turns out only New York lists this ship. I learned that ships arriving in 1867 landed in Castle Garden. So I searched: All NY Ship Lists (1820-1957) - familysearch: Searching for Ships in all New York Microfilms in One Step: There I searched the name of the ship, St. Laurent, in 1867 It gave me 6 dates for the St Laurent in 1867. One is in June, another in August. I went to familysearch.org and clicked on search records. At the bottom of that page there is a box where you can find a collection. I entered "passenger list" in the box and it gave me a list to choose from. I chose: New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1891 At the bottom of that page is the option: "Browse through 428,944 images" http://tinyurl.com/nhy6kom <https://familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https://familysearch.org/recapi/sord/collection/1849782/waypoints> That brings you to a page that lists the NARA roll numbers and what dates they cover. The info I got >from stevenmorse.com gave me the NARA roll numbers and pages that contain the St Laurent passenger lists, so all I had to do from there is click on each applicable roll number and browse to thatpage. The page numbers in the film itself vary a little bit >from the page numbers you get in your search, but they get you in the right neighborhood and it is easy to find the list >from there.
