I am looking for the passenger list of Reb Yitzchok (Isaac)GROSSMAN. He
lived in Fristick and Stopkov in Europe and then moved to Cleveland,OH.
He came into N.Y. HARBOR harbor on July 4, 1902 . If you can give me a
clue to where I should look that would be great.

SAPHIR, Arthur #general

Iris Folkson <iris-f@...>

I am looking for Arthur SAPHIR. He is the son of my mothers first cousin,
Bessie FLEISHMAN who married ? SAPHIR. Bessie FLEISHMAN was the daughter
of Esther KRAVITZ and Baruch FLEISHMAN.

Arthur would be about 79 today. Several years ago, I found an Arthur
SAPHIR in Florida and sent him a letter. I did not receive a reply. Next
time I tried to find him he did not exist.

I have checked the SSDI and find no Arthur SAPHIR. Arthur grew up in
Ridgewood Queens or Brooklyn, NY depending on the dividing line. If memory
serves my uncle correctly, he married and moved to the Bronx and earned his
living as a TV repair man.

Finding Arthur will enable me to fill in the FLEISHMAN branch of my tree.
His mother had many siblings which include:

Manya who married ? KAHN and lived in either the Bronx or Washington
Heights, NY
Toby
Mumsy
Isaac who lived in Hornel, NY
Jack who married Millie and died in Tyler, Texas
Sol who married Mary and lived at (numerals deleted) W. 111 St, in the 1960's.

Thanking you all in advance. I know you will come through if you can.

KATZ with ROSENBERG? #general

Hilary Henkin <propper@...>

Hi, everyone!
Does anyone here have both KATZ and ROSENBERG in the same branch
of their family tree? I've just learned that my
great-grandfather Joseph KATZ had a sister! Her married name was
Rosenberg, and both Katz and Rosenberg families lived in New York
City around 1920-1940.There were other siblings as well, but nothing is
known about them yet. The KATZ family immigrated >from Ekterinaslav in the
Ukraine. They may have originated in Poland.

Thanks to all who may respond!

Stepan landsmanschaft #general

Jo Schwartz inquired about the Stepan landsmanschaft and where its
records might be.

1. YIVO has a publication, "A Guide to Yivo's Landsmanschaftn
Archive," and Stepan is not included.

2. Landsmanschaftn records do not typically include immigration and
burial records of its members.

3. The JewishGen FAQ contains a wealth of information on research sources.

Azoulai #hungary

IsraelP <zach4v6@...>

The manufacture of blue for textiles is a very old Jewish trade, going
back to the Middle Ages or perhaps even to Ancient Times. Witness the
family name Azulai, half Spanish, half Hebrew. Azul is blue in Spanish and
the ending ai is Hebrew ending for occupation.(E.g. banai= builder;
haklai=farmer, etc.)

Dr. Joseph M. Schwarcz
Arad, Israel
I beg to differ with my friend and former neighbor. Azoulai is an
acronym based on Leviticus 21 v 7 and is a Kohen name.

Yiddish - Deutsch #hungary

Tomer Brunner <tomerbr@...>

For all linguists and friends,
The following might interest you.
I have a letter which was written in 1920 by my g-g-grandfather.
The letter is written in a language which my grandmother (and probably
others ) call -
" YIDDISH - DEUTSCH".
As far as I know this language was used mostly by the orthodox jews,
who went to YESHIVAs. The non-religious jew used mostly the
Hochdeutsch, as was learnt in school. (of course, also the orthodox
jews went to public schools and knew this German dialect. They too
used it).
The writer of the letter was the rabbi of Nameszto (now Namestovo),
Slovakia, which is very close to the border of Galitzia, where
the use of Yiddish was common.
Nevertheless, I believe that the Yiddish - Deutsch is not the same dialect
as the Galitzian one.

In my grandmother's home, in Szomzbathely, they didn't speak this
Yiddish jargon (nor even a different one), but used many Yiddish
or Hebrew words in religious context, like: "YOM-Kipper" for Yom-
Kippur; "SHABBES" for Shabbath; "PIRREM" for Purim etc...
The letter is written in hebrew letters but it looks more Germen
written in Hebrew letters than Yiddish.
I couldn't decipher all the letter because the shape of the letters
is difficult to read, but soon I'll ask an old family member to
help me with this.

Does anybody hear/ know anything about this dialect?
Was it spread all over the Austro-Hungarian empire?
What other dialect where used?

If you want to see the letter, contact me and I'll Email you
a scanning of it.

Hope it helps,
Tomer Brunner, ISRAEL.

I need help in locating any newspaper stories, obituary, or death notice
regarding a plane crash that occurred in 1948.
I would need a town, state or some sort of locality in order to find this
information. It is unlikely to be a national news item.

Federation of Hungarian Jews in America #hungary

As I mentioned previously, I have been doing research in the State Dept
Records for Hungary. Today, I came across a letter >from the

Federation of Hungarian Jews in America
400 E. Houston St.
New York City.

The letter, which was requesting that the Ambassador assist in a matter
concerning an American/Hungarian Jew and the Hungarian Government, was
written in about 1922. I know nothing more about this organization, but I
wondered if any (h-sig)er knows more about it, including whether any
records >from this organization still exist.
