Using the ShtetlSeeker at < http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker >
I learned that Seirijai is in Lithuania.
Then, using the IAJGS Cemetery Project website at
< http://www.jewishgen.org/cemetery/liths.htm >, I learned that Seirijai
is listed and can be accessed there.

Hello,

I found an interesting picture, that seems like a graduation picture, with
the following title : (thanks to the translators)

The office of the Hungarian Jewish patrons.
The home of the Jewish Orthodox students (apprentices)
on the 2nd anniversary of its founding

Anyone knows what house is it? Where it was? Anyone knows any of those
students?
I hope soon to publish here, all the names that appear in the picture, with
their place. The students are >from all Hungary :Budapest,
Debrecen,Ungvar,Hust etc.

Meanwhile , look at the picture at :

One detail to add to the story of Baron Hirsch is that the orthodox
shul (Beth Israel) in Halifax, Nova Scotia is named the Baron de
Hirsch Congregation.

What is Free Worth? #general

Chuck Weinstein <cweinstein@...>

Paul Armony's note in yesterday's digest prompts me to get up on my
soapbox, if even for a moment. All too often, it is tempting to expect
that since all of this information is available on line at no charge, it
must be free. It is common courtesy, when you expect a reply by mail,
to send a stamped, self addressed envelope, so that the responder, who
did not solicit your request, does not have to reach into his/her pocket
to provide you with information you have not paid for.

All of the vast amount of information on the JewishGen pages has a
cost. No, JewishGen does not charge for membership, and there is no
plan for a provision to require a credit card payment to get into
certain areas. However, the dedicated volunteers who work so hard to
make this information available to each of us at no charge, tell only
part of the story.

The cost is simply the cost of operating and maintaining a huge set of
servers and computers that allow JewishGen to provide all the services
that many of you seem to think cost nothing. Whether you are a
professional genealogist who delves into the databases and works
actively with the various SIGs who help you make a living, or are just
trying to find out exactly where bubbe and zayde came from, JewishGen
incurs costs in providing you with that information.

As the secular year end approaches, make a resolve to either reimburse
JewishGen by becoming a contributor, and/or volunteer to do one or more
of the much needed jobs that allow others to benefit >from this "free"
research tool.

I speak, not as a volunteer who has given what he can to JewishGen in
time and money, but as someone who has benefited >from research that a
few years ago, no one would have dreamed could exist. There is no free
lunch, and if you expect someone else to pay for your benefit, you are
not being fair to those of us who recognize that basic truth.

Now I will get off my soapbox and wish all a Happy Chanukah!

Baron HIRSCH #belarus

Alan Tapper wrote that his family wenT to the US thanks to the action
of Baron Hirsch encouraging jews >from the Russian Empire to emmigrate

the Jewish Colonization Association. The JCA founded jewish colonies
not only in USA, but in Canada, Argentina, Brazil and, I think, in
Australia as well. In Argentina there are some little towns which
recognize that origin: Rivera, Colonia Dora, Moises Ville, Colonia
