Beider has Rapel as from the noun Rappel German for craze or crazy mood.  It also has Rafel which goes to Rafal - which is Rafael as was suggested.

My husband’s great-grandfather was Louis Raffel (later Raphael) born 1 April 1854 in (per his death certificate) Lobaschni / Lobaschni, German-Poland.  His Death Certificate lists his parents as Arthur Myron Raphael and Nancy Lory (Levy). His marriage certificate lists his parents as Abram Raffel and Rosa Meyer.  I would love to know the location of his birthplace and where the records are located.

Kris Murawski

Phonetically, Gendha reminds me of Gęsta which is pronounced Gensta. However, ulica Gęsta was a short street with numbers not exceeding 20, thus there was no such address as 73 Gęsta Street. Gęsta Street was known for several tanneries (in Polish, see Wikipedia). At present, there is only one house at Gęsta Street address, number 1 (ulica Gęsta 1). Other former Gęsta Street addresses have been renamed to Wiślana Street addresses.

There is a Jewish name Raffel.   Is it possible that “f” and “p” got switched somewhere along the way?

I would take the Ancestry, which can be uploaded to MyHeritage and FTDNA. It will give you plenty of data to start with.
There will plenty of opportunities later on for more discounted tests, for Father's Day, Christmas etc.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am new to jewishgen and I often see people asking for translations of rather large documents. Is it the expectation that these documents will be translated free of charge?

Thank you.

Tracing Family Members Conscripted into the Russian Imperial Army - Possible? #russia #records

David Levine

Hi everyone,

I just learned that two different family members were conscripted into the Russian Imperial army, in 1839 and in 1863.

Is it possible to find records for those individuals?

Are they online or can anyone recommend experts who research this?

Thanks
David

On the topic of Mokom Sholom...In the many NYC death records that I have looked at over the years, I have seen few, if any, that indicated burial at Mokom Sholom.  Does anyone know from what background those at Mokom Sholom came? Was it a specific set of synagogues or countries? Or were the burials recorded as Bayside when they were actually at Mokom Sholom?
