Help needed before IAGJS #belarus

Laura L <pinkluna@...>

Hello! I'm going to my first conference, and hoping to make the best use of my
time. I've been researching for several years, but still have many loose threads
and brick walls. I'm researching my grandmother's family in Belarus, specially
the MEIEROVITZ family of Smorgon, and the CEGIELNICKA/Zigelnitka/Tzgelnitka family
of Lida and Woronowa. The Meierovitz family may have owned a factory, My great
grandmother, Elka, had at least 4 sisters, Bashe (married named Rabinowitz),
Sara (married name Kac), Gimple and Devora. There was a brother named Nacham.
Parts of the family were in Minsk, Vilna, and Kovno. The parents were Eliezer
and Sheina.

I believe that Elka Meierovitz married my great grandfather Chaim (Hyman)
ZIGELNITKA (CEGIELNICKA) in Vilna in 1904 according to her naturalization
certificate. Their Americanized names were Ella/Elka and Hyman SIGEL/SIEGEL.

I am hoping that someone here might be related to the family, or have some
ideas about specific resources to utilize while at the IAGJS. I have been
unable to track down their marraige record on JewishGen, or the birth records
of their daughters Lillian (Leah) 1910, Rivka (dob around 1912) and
Macha (Mildred) around 1913, all born in Smorgon to the best of my knowledge.
Please contact me if you can help, I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much.

This is a great list.
Thank you for your help.

Descendant of R' Chaim of Volozhin #rabbinic

Yonatan Ben-Ari

According to a dictated note written by my great uncle, his
grandmother, Sarah Hinde KANTOR was a descendant of R' Chaim of
Volozhin and her "unterfierer" (that took her to her wedding) was R'
Itzaleh, R' Chaim's son. Sarah Hinde does not appear in any published
trees and supposedly was orphaned at a young age while R' Itzaleh (her
grandfather?) was still alive.

Sounds a bit like R'Itzaleh's daughter and son-in-law-LANDAU who both
passed away during his life time.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the above Sarah Hinde (maiden name
unknown to me).

TIA

Shavua tov

Refael ReSHaCH - dayan in Krakow, d. 1758 #rabbinic

Yaron Pedhazur

Dear fellow researchers,

Rabbi Refael ReSHa"CH was a "dayan" in Krakow during the first half of
the 18th century, and died there in 1758. He was descending >from Rabbi
Yehoshua "Charif" of Krakow, author of Meginei Shlomo, via his
son-in-law, R' Shalom Schachna KATZ of Krakow (died there in 1685).

In a new blog post, a first in a series on R' Refael and his family,
you would find new discoveries on the lineage leading to the "Meginei
Shlomo", and also further mysteries and questions on the "yichus":

https://goo.gl/HThwbc

In the next posts (not yet published) it would be shown how multiple
families in Krakow of the 19-20th century descended >from R' Refael,
probably not knowing of his mere existence.

I would appreciate any further info on R' Refael and his ancestors, as
well as any original family traditions leading to R' Refael (not based
on the known Hebrew literature on old Krakow - which was already
covered).

Please respond privately to:

Thank you very much,

jews and converses in new spain #sephardic

Nadene Norr <nnorr@...>

Hello,

I am researching family lines of jews and converses in Alta California,
Baja California Sur, Sonora and Zacatecas. Beginning in the 1700's, it
became fashionable for families to just use one name rather than the
father's name and then the mother's, which made it easier to track
their ancestry. I am stuck on Castro, Lugo, De Cota, Verdugo, Bojorquez
and De Leon families once they traveled >from Mexico proper and began
settling California in the late 1700's.

Any information would be useful.

Sincerely,

Nadene Norr
