Merchants' Third Guild (Novograd-Volynsk), 1858 #general

Jerry Morse <Jerry_Morse@...>

A genealogist living in Zhitomir, Ukraine whom I hired appears to have
found my ggf, Mendel Chernomorsky, listed in 1858 officials records for
Novograd-Volynsk. In his report, the genealogist says that Mendel was a
"member of the third guild." Can anyone provide any additional information
on the "third guild" in this area at this time?

Identifying place of marriage #general

Gailcopela@...

I have the date on which my grand-aunt was married, and I know she was married
in the East End of London (I have the registry information >from the marriage
index). What I don't know is at which synagogue (neither one of her sons has
this information). Which person or office would be the best to approach to
research this information? Please reply privately. TIA.

Argentine phone searches #general

IsraelP <p2o5rock@...>

The searches engines I have for the Argentine white pages all
insist that you do one state/province at a time. I realize that most
Jews are likely to be in "Federal Capital," but I'd still like to find
something that will search all of them at once - especially as there
are quite a few ways to spell some surnames.

Failing that, what other areas are most likely to have Jews?

Searching: Yacov BORNSTEIN, b. Wloslavick (Pol.), end 1900s #general

Frieda Libaw <fbl2@...>

Searching for ancestors of Yakov BORNSTEIN who was married to Rosa
LICHTENSTEIN and who lived in Wloslavick, Poland toward the end of the
19th and beginning of the 20th century. He was a schochet and mohel.
Any information on this family and on the following would be gratefully
received.

Am also searching for ancestors of Yoel-Wolf GOLDSTEIN and his wife,
Rifka LACHS (or LAX) who lived in Lipno, Poland, He was a member of a
Chassidic group and the owner of two enterprises; one that manufactured
cotton interlining for winter garments and the other that dealt with
crystal and porcelain ware. Rifka's father was Moishe Lachs, who died
ca. 1895 and her mother was Gitl who died ca. 1879. Both of these men
were highly respected members of the community and Moishe served as its
representative in dealing with the Czarist government.

I may be contacted at fbl2@... In lieu of direct information
any suggestions on how to conduct my search would be more then
welcome.Thanks in advance.

Half cousins, half aunts, etc. #general

Paul & Joan Blumstein <pbjb@...>

If your grandfather had two wives and you are the grandchild of one wife
and someone else is the grandchild of the other wife, are you two still
considered cousins or would half-cousins be a more appropriate term?

My father-in-law always referred to someone as his half-aunt. Now that my
wife
met her (half-)cousin (Thank you FTJP!) she has wondered whether that
person is a cousin or half-cousin.

I suspect that we call that person a cousin even though it is not as full a
connection as two people who shared both grandparents. A limitation of the
English language, perhaps?

Thoughts, anyone? (On this topic, silly:-)
