Finding Family Rabbi #general

Chloe2000@...

Can anyone help with advice on how to locate family Rabbis? I have basic
information on names, approx. dates (>from marriage certificates) and
synagogues where they served--all New York City. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Yelets, Russia #general

sjkmb4@...

My mggm and ggf, Jacob (Yankel) and Fannie (Faiga)(Weitzman) ROSENFIELD were
from Yelets, Russia. They arrived in US 1886, living in Providence, RI (10
Shawmut St.) until about 1920 where he was a kosher butcher. Had 5 children
that lived, Max, Charles, Louis, Corne (Ralph) and my gm Annie (her twin died
at birth). Jacob had brothers Tevya, Menesha and Alda in RI. I have
telegrams to my gm at her wedding in NJ (1917) >from Aunt Rebecca GORDON and
Aunt Kate ABEDAN >from Providence. Cannot find out anything about these
people. Have searched Jewish Gen, SSI index. Have no idea of when they
died. Is there anyone in RI who can research these two women? Also, is
anyone else out there researching Yelets ( 217 mi. s of Moscow)? I have been
the only person on the database and Jewish Gen for this place.

In relation to the questions >from Bob Weiss in Palo Alto USA:

<<Does anyone know whether the versions being digitized are the
originals or latest update versions or perhaps both?>>
<<Do libraries maintain multiple versions for different years?>>

"The Library accumulated its unsurpassed collection of fire insurance maps
primarily through copyright deposit. In addition, the Bureau of the Census
transferred a set of maps updated with pasted-on corrections through to the
mid-1950s to the Library of Congress in 1967." (qouted from

A detailed description of the digitizing project can be found at

More answers can be found on the Library of Congress web site

Poland Patronymic Era #general

J Schamroth <scham@...>

I am working on my early ancestry >from Krakow, Poland ...in particular the
second half of the 18th century (about 1750 to 1800). This is the era prior
to surnames when people merely had a patronymics (e.g., Izaak, son of
Jakob). The absence of surnames makes this era particularly difficult to
research, and I would very much like to hear >from anyone who has experience
in this area (i.e., pre-1800 Krakow).

I have quite a lot of family data (which is not >from my ancestry) that I can
share with others who are specifically interested in this topic.

Please reply privately,

Hallo Jewishgenners.

Dear H-SIG members!
I'm happy to say that I'll be going back to Israel with my
family in a few weeks.
Soon I'll unsubscribe and then subscribe under a new e-mail.

see you all,
and happy birthday Louis,
Margalit (Mocsari)Modai.

mod.- I'm sure others will send you their best wishes directly. However, on behalf of the sig, I would like to wish you the best of Mazal and great success. Israel is the single greatest repository in the world of Hungarian Jewish genealogy information. Not long ago, there was only the IGS based in Jerusalem and the Galil group. Now there are growing groups in the Negev, Tel Aviv and as well. There are also at least two centers in Israel for specifically Hungarian Jewish research: The Museum for Hungarian Speaking Jewry located in Safed (Tzefat) and Yad L'eyd located on Moshav Nir Galim (close to Ashdod). We look forward to your re-establishing e-mail contact with us soon.LS

Trying to locate family sponsored by my parents #general

Susan Chernin <Susan.Chernin@...>

When it was still possible my parents William and Hannah Chernin sponsored
two refugee families >from Europe. I believe at least originally they
settled in the Philadelphia area. I never knew their name but I believe the
were relatives of a woman named Jenny Guss whose husband Joseph was my
fathers best friend. There is some possibility that the last name could
have been Pasternack as Jenny was a cousin of Joe Pasternack the producer.

If any of this sounds familiar to anyone ,please get in touch with me
privately. I would like to fill in the missing pieces.

Thank you
Susan Chernin
